Chapter Fourteen

“Your beautiful hands are all torn up.” Emma sounded on the verge of tears as she applied an antiseptic to my palms, which had indeed gotten torn up when I landed on them out on the street.

“I’m glad I put my sweatshirt on not a minute before it happened, or my arms would look like they do.” When I realized there were tears rolling down Emma’s cheeks, I pulled my hand back. “Look at me. I’m fine.”

“You might not have been. I can’t stand to think of what might’ve happened if you hadn’t jumped out of the way in time.” She ran a hand under her eyes. “Sorry to be so emotional, but that’s not the phone call a person wants to get. That their sister was almost hit by a car.”

Not almost hit by a car. That would imply an element of innocence. Accidents happened. People took their eyes off the road because their phone rang or their coffee spilled.

An accident didn’t involve the revving of an engine, the flooring of the gas pedal.

We both turned toward the door when it opened. Joe walked in, shaking his head. “Nobody saw anything. I can’t even get a decent make on the car. Everybody was too concerned with you.”

“You make that sound like it’s a bad thing.” Emma put an arm around me, and I fought against the impulse to flinch away. Really, I wasn’t hurt badly, but most of my body ached from the force of the impact with the ground.

“Of course, I don’t mean it in a bad way. It’s just that I wish that out of four people, one of them would’ve had the presence of mind to take a look at the car.” He looked over his notes, scowling. “Then again, with it being as dark out as it is now, I doubt there would’ve been much to make out. Especially since according to all accounts, the driver peeled away.”

“They did. Like a bat out of hell.”

Emma sniffled. “Sorry. It’s just a lot to deal with.” No kidding. I wondered how she would feel on my side of things.

Lola hopped up on the couch and lifted a paw to tap my arm. “This is new.” She had never done that before, not even when I was dog sitting during Emma’s honeymoon.

“She does that when she senses somebody is hurting or upset.” Sure enough, the little Maltese gave the back of my hand a gentle lick before she curled up next to me, snug against my leg. “She’ll watch over you now.”

I wished I could pet her, my hands were still a mess. “Thank you, sweet girl.” She lifted her head just enough to look up at me, then lowered it again and closed her eyes.

Joe stood in front of us, folding his arms, looking every inch the cop. “Any ideas who might have done this?”

“I bet it was that lady who called you.” Emma snarled. “I wish I could get my hands on her.”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions.
