CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I sat down and started to gather up my things, the mention of David reminding me of the morning’s conversation with Meredith. I was starving, despite the large lunch, and exhausted. Not just sleepy but bone weary like I had spent days running a marathon while taking a test. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t ready to go. There was something more I needed to do. Had to do. But was it even safe to attempt?

“I heard them talking about the murder this morning. Do you ever help out with that kind of thing?”

Esmerelda raised an eyebrow. “Do I ever help murder someone?”

“No, no, no. I meant help solve a murder. Couldn’t there be a spell or something?”

“You had me worried for a second.” She sat down opposite me, preparing for a longer answer. “Yes, I do what I can when they ask, but it isn’t as simple as just whipping up a spell. Usually, at least. I did try, but the scene was old by the time I was back, and there wasn’t a lot else I could do.”

“But if someone was in the area but didn’t see the person, could you help then?”

“You mean a witness? I guess it depends. If they are a magic worker, then most likely, but I am limited by a lot of factors. Do they want to tell the truth? Can they communicate well what they are experiencing? What is their ability to even know what they are feeling? I mean, really, what I do is not so different than what humans call forensics. I saw this lovely little show where they could collect a sample of grass and then get a map of the city and all the places it was planted, but we have nothing like that.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her that humans didn’t have that either, but I decided that wasn’t the point. “What if the witness didn’t see the person? Could you still do a spell?”

“There is something I call a Cinderella spell. Now, why don’t you tell me why you are asking.”

I hesitated. Right now, only the police knew I had been a witness.

“Give me just a second,” I said, reaching into my bag for the card Aiden had given me. Dialing the number, I stepped outside, instantly regretting not grabbing my coat.

“Officer Ural here,” Aiden said.

“Hi, it’s Brooke.”

“Hey, Brooke. What’s up?”

“Can I trust Esmerelda?”

“Yeah, she’s a great instructor. I heard you were taking classes over there. How are they going?”

“Great. She’s great. But I meant like… Is there any chance she is mixed up in the murder?”

There was a long pause before he replied. “Brooke, do you feel unsafe?”

“No, I’m asking this badly. Esmerelda said that she sometimes helps the police, and I thought that maybe if I told her what happened, she might be able to get me a spell to help me find the killer.”

“Brooke, we have a suspect in custody.”

“Then it won’t hurt to try, right? Can I tell her?”

I swear I heard him sigh.
