“DO YOU REMEMBER THE light spell I taught you?”

“Yes,” Jawar said. “It’s burned into my mind forever.”

“Light our path. It’s getting dark and we’re so deep in the forest that what little daylight we have left won’t pass through the leaves.”

They had been traveling east for hours, and not once had Jawar strayed from the correct path. Merlin wondered if he could subconsciously sense the artifact’s energy, similar to how Merlin tracked it down. That was the only explanation. It was not like the boy was a skilled explorer. He had never left Raimore’s city walls in the 13 years he had lived there, and he had never been in this part of Taviel before.

No, this was pure magical instinct. The more he worked and trained with Merlin, the more he tapped into his true potential. It was fascinating to watch him become a little mage.

Holding his hands palm up, Jawar recited the spell under his breath. Instantly, two glowing orbs hovered just above his hands, lighting the dense path ahead. Critters scampered through the forest, startled by the bright lights.

Spotting a clearing just up ahead, Merlin knew that they were nearly to their destination. They had made good time, and once he had the artifact in his possession, they would set up camp and get some rest. He sensed that Jawar was getting tired from all the walking, assuming he had never traveled as far in his life.

“See that well?” Merlin pointed over Jawar’s shoulder, just north of where they were standing. “That’s it.”

“A well?” Jawar questioned. “I thought we were looking for an artifact, not a landmark.”

“It’s in the well,” Merlin explained. “You’ll see.”

Jawar picked up his pace then, and Merlin had to take longer strides just to keep up. It was not long before they stepped out onto padded grass, and Merlin’s legs felt instant relief from climbing over fallen trees and overgrown roots for the past few hours. Jawar huffed and sank to his knees, his pack falling from his back and landing in the soft grass.

“Now I know why you said to pack lightly.”

“Don’t say I didn’t tell you so,” Merlin snickered. “At least you will know for next time.”

Jawar’s eyes lit up with excitement. “You mean we will go on more adventures like this one?”

“I don’t see why not.”

Merlin circled the ancient well twice, examining its condition. The last thing he needed was to lean his body weight on it and have it crumble beneath his weight. Determining it would hold its structure, Merlin peered down into the well, only to find nothing but darkness. That did not come as a shock. He assumed that the well had not been functioning in at least one hundred years.

“I feel it,” Jawar whispered.

He stood next to Merlin and raised his arm up, showing that the hairs were standing upright, just the same as Merlin’s were. The energy in this artifact was strong, and he was grateful that they had been the ones to find it, not someone else.
