9 weeks left
Itâs been a week and I havenât spoken a word to Brandon. I donât really know what to say to him. He went too far saying that Michelle and I wouldnât last. I donât know if it is something I can forgive him for. Out of all the people I need to have my back, I need my best friend. I need him especially when I leave, because I need to make sure Michelle is safe.
And spending these next nine weeks being mad at him doesnât sound like a good time, at least the kind we had planned. He took the next few months off work so we can hang out before I leave. Luckily, he works with his father, so money isnât really an issue for him.
âOkay, talk to me.â Mom nudges me with her hip.
âHow do you know I have something on my mind?â
âYou always do the dishes when you are thinking, Andrey. Whatâs going on? Do you have second thoughts about the Navy?â she asks, her brown eyes sparkling with hope.
âEven if I did, I canât back out. I have four years I have to commit to, Mom.â I nudge her back and she chuckles. It reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfireâs laugh. Damn, I love that movie. Maybe Michelle will want to watch it with me.
âI know. Iâm proud of you, but youâve been staring out the window for ten minutes and washing the same spot on that pan.â
I look down and notice Iâm going in the same circular motion with the sponge. I drop the pan in the sink and wash the suds off. âSorry, Mom.â
âWhatâs going on?â she presses.
I dip my hands in the sink again and grab the pan, then freeze. Damn, sheâs right. I do wash the dishes when I need to think. I go with it. I take the sponge and make sure to clean a dirty spot. âItâs Brandon and Michelle.â
I know how it sounds as it leaves my mouth, but I have two separate issues with both of my best friends, one my lover too. Michelleâs dad has been pressing her about Heath the last week, and luckily, sheâs been able to skirt around the subject because sheâs always with me.
âOh? Really? I didnât think they had chemistry. If they started something it is going to frizzle fastââ
ââGod, no. No, not like that. Itâs actually, umâ¦â
âWhat is it, hon?â
âMichelle isâ¦â
âSheâs hurt? Was it that father of hers? Oh gosh, is she okay?â
âSheâs fine, Mom.â
âThen what is it? And what does it have to do with Brandon?â
I take a deep breath. âMichelle and I are dating now.â
She claps her hands and squeals. âOh, I just knew it. I knew youâd get together eventually. We need to plan the wedding. Iâm going to be a grandma!â she cheers and gives me a side hug, shuffling her feet as if sheâs dancing.
âWhoa, whoa, whoa, no. Mom, no. She isnât pregnant. We donât plan on that for a long time.â
âOh,â she pouts.
âJeez, Mom.
