9 weeks left

It’s been a week and I haven’t spoken a word to Brandon. I don’t really know what to say to him. He went too far saying that Michelle and I wouldn’t last. I don’t know if it is something I can forgive him for. Out of all the people I need to have my back, I need my best friend. I need him especially when I leave, because I need to make sure Michelle is safe.

And spending these next nine weeks being mad at him doesn’t sound like a good time, at least the kind we had planned. He took the next few months off work so we can hang out before I leave. Luckily, he works with his father, so money isn’t really an issue for him.

“Okay, talk to me.” Mom nudges me with her hip.

“How do you know I have something on my mind?”

“You always do the dishes when you are thinking, Andrey. What’s going on? Do you have second thoughts about the Navy?” she asks, her brown eyes sparkling with hope.

“Even if I did, I can’t back out. I have four years I have to commit to, Mom.” I nudge her back and she chuckles. It reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire’s laugh. Damn, I love that movie. Maybe Michelle will want to watch it with me.

“I know. I’m proud of you, but you’ve been staring out the window for ten minutes and washing the same spot on that pan.”

I look down and notice I’m going in the same circular motion with the sponge. I drop the pan in the sink and wash the suds off. “Sorry, Mom.”

“What’s going on?” she presses.

I dip my hands in the sink again and grab the pan, then freeze. Damn, she’s right. I do wash the dishes when I need to think. I go with it. I take the sponge and make sure to clean a dirty spot. “It’s Brandon and Michelle.”

I know how it sounds as it leaves my mouth, but I have two separate issues with both of my best friends, one my lover too. Michelle’s dad has been pressing her about Heath the last week, and luckily, she’s been able to skirt around the subject because she’s always with me.

“Oh? Really? I didn’t think they had chemistry. If they started something it is going to frizzle fast—”

“—God, no. No, not like that. It’s actually, um…”

“What is it, hon?”

“Michelle is…”

“She’s hurt? Was it that father of hers? Oh gosh, is she okay?”

“She’s fine, Mom.”

“Then what is it? And what does it have to do with Brandon?”

I take a deep breath. “Michelle and I are dating now.”

She claps her hands and squeals. “Oh, I just knew it. I knew you’d get together eventually. We need to plan the wedding. I’m going to be a grandma!” she cheers and gives me a side hug, shuffling her feet as if she’s dancing.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, no. Mom, no. She isn’t pregnant. We don’t plan on that for a long time.”

“Oh,” she pouts.

“Jeez, Mom.
