OVERTIME:

GEORGETOWN ALL-AMERICAN GREG MCCAVERA

Greg McCavera was a standout member of several Hoyas teams that played during a great era of Georgetown lacrosse in the late 1990s. He shared some memories that define a distinct time and place in the evolution of Georgetown into a top-caliber Division I program.

ON THE QUIRKY ROOFTOP KEHOE FIELD:

You would have teams come up and play, and the wind would be howling and it would be as cold as anything in January, February and early March. There were dead spots in the turf. You’d take one shot and the ball would bounce up high; you’d take another and the ball would be dead and trickle into the goal. It was sort of like playing lacrosse on the moon.

ON PLAYING FOR COACH DAVE URICK:

Dave Urick was not a yeller or a screamer; he was very much a teacher. He’s a big character guy, and if you’re up there on Kehoe in January and February and it snowed, there wasn’t a guy up there to shovel. Part of our practice was shoveling off the turf. It built the character of the team. It built a bond with the guys; we were really close.

ON THE WORKMANLIKE APPROACH OF GEORGETOWN PLAYERS:

My senior year of high school I was 125 pounds and five-foot-seven. I grew in college and when I left there I was five-foot-nine, 195 pounds. There were a lot of guys that were like that. Guys that were good lacrosse players but might have been passed over by the Dukes, the Syracuses, the Marylands, for whatever reason. I think we had a bit of blue-collar, workmanlike attitude back then. When you came in as a freshman, you didn’t get new equipment. You got equipment that was recycled and reused. We had a cleat bank. You got cleats that somebody wore the year before whether it was football or lacrosse.

ON THE HIRING OF CURRENT HEAD COACH KEVIN WARNE:

I think Kevin Warne is a great addition. He’s very much like Dave Urick in his hardworking attitude. He brings intensity with him to the program. Kevin’s a contemporary of mine; he played at Hofstra. A really great guy.
