JASON ROLLED OVER, only to find the space beside him cold. He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes before squinting at the clock on the nightstand.

“Why is she up so early?”

Usually, he would have been up by now himself, but decided to sleep in since they stayed up for another round of lovemaking after their shower.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed. After taking care of his morning needs, he would go see what Lezlie was up to.

Treadmill on an incline of eight, speed on six-point-five, Lezlie’s arms pumped as she walked so fast she was a stone’s throw away from breaking into a jog. Alone in her own world as she exercised, her mind went back to the female caller she’d been unsuccessful in tracking down. The last thing she’d done before leaving work yesterday afternoon was to make the weekend social worker on call aware that the woman might call again. “And if she does, please call me on my cell.”

Daisy assured Lezlie that she would reach out to her if the woman tried to make contact again.

Lezlie upped the incline. Something didn’t feel right about the caller. After checking out the local hospitals, of which there were only two, there had been no reports of an abused pregnant woman presenting for emergency care.

Trooper followed on Jason’s heels as he descended into the basement where he found Lezlie exercising in his home gym. He cocked his head to the side as he studied her features. Her body and mind were miles apart. Something was troubling her, but what?

Her eyes came into focus and she smiled. “Hey! What are you doing up?” She hoped he hadn’t seen her all spaced out.

“Came down looking for you. Is everything alright?”

Lezlie, shook her head. “Not really,” she panted.

He nodded. “Alright. Let’s talk after you’re finished. I’m going to take Trooper out.”

She gave him the thumbs up sign.

By the time Jason returned with Trooper, Lezlie had showered, dressed and was in the kitchen preparing breakfast.

The sight of her easily moving around his space tugged at his heart. He couldn’t wait for the day he’d come home to her every day.

“It smells good in here. What are you fixing?”

She looked over her shoulder at him and smiled. “Turkey bacon, home fries, and omelets with mushroom, spinach and onions.”

Her stomach let out a loud growl and they both laughed.

“Hurry up and go wash your hands! I’m hungry!”

Trooper moseyed into the kitchen and sat at Lezlie’s feet.

“Oh, no you don’t! Don’t look at me with those sad eyes. You got me in trouble the last time and had the nerve to leave me hanging.”

Lezlie sucked her teeth. “Stop all that whining,”

She took a few steps to peek in the hallway. Good, Jason was nowhere in sight. Taking two strips of the turkey bacon, she fed them to the pooch.

“Now, get out of here before you get us both in trouble,” she whispered, shooing him away.

Like the good dog he was, Trooper obediently loped off to the living room to stare out the window.
