Chapter 13

Almost as soon as we got onto US 40 my phone rang. “Mack, something’s wrong with Lucy. She’s barking her head off and running in circles!”

I shifted my cell to better fit my ear as I struggled to keep the Hummer going in a straight line as I gunned it up to 120 mph. “Claire put me on speaker and try to get Lucy to listen to the phone. As the speaker came on I could the little bitzer barking hysterically. I can’t get a telepathic fix on someone over the phone so I had to rely on my recall and Mai’s interpretation of Lucy’s limited canine vocabulary. “Lucy! Lucy! Slow down! What’s wrong?” I spoke as loudly as I could without distorting my voice. Lucy calmed a little when she recognized my voice. She spoke directly into the phone in her warbling growl language. It was unintelligible.

“Mai you getting that?”

“Not quite, have her repeat it.”

“Again, Lucy.” The little dog repeated herself but her voice was becoming desperate and anxious.

“Mai?”

“I think I’ve got it. Bad dog, stinky man.”

“CLAIRE! GET EVERYONE INSIDE AND GET THE WARDS UP NOW!” I could hear the phone’s reception distort as it scraped against her palm but the ward activation commands were there.

“Mack? What’s wrong? What’s she saying?”

“Bad dog, stinky man, it means werewolf, vampire! Arm yourselves and stay away from the windows and doors. Get Casey on the roof so he can act as an early warning.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m still in Chesterfield.”

“Oh, God Mack it’ll take you 30 minutes to get here!”

“No, it won’t. Hold them at bay as long as you can, Claire. I’m on my way.”

I disconnected the phone and started punching buttons on the Hummer’s control panel. A small pressurized gas delivery system came online. Kolann knew enough to sense something was very wrong. “What are you doing, Mack?”

I continued my prep work. “You’ve never Slipped with me, have you Kolann?”

“No…why?”

“We’re going to try something.”

“And that would be?”

“I’m going to Slip us to the safe house.”

“Gods above! Have you ever done that before? Slipped that kind of distance?”

“Once, on foot.”

“Mack, what aren’t you telling me?”

“We’re going to Slip, Hummer and all.”

“What?”

A computer voice emanated from the vehicle’s speaker system. “Five seconds to rapid acceleration system deployment. 5…4…3…2…1”

The tail lights on the Hummer exploded outward as two solid fuel rockets ignited. The Hummer shot forward subjecting us to three plus Gs as we came within nanoseconds of slamming into the back of a dump truck.

Kolann began to panic. “MACK!” The Hummer lurched and began to stall as the resistance, and lack of atmosphere in The Void took hold of it. I put on an Oxygen mask and flipped a switch. The electrical propulsion system went off line and the 6.7L Power V8 Turbo Diesel Engine engaged. A raw Oxygen/Nitrogen mix started to pump into the engine and it roared to life. We were able to maintain our speed thanks to the rockets not requiring oxygen to burn but they would only last 90 seconds.
