CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Just before 4pm, there was a knock on the door. When Lily opened it, her heart went into freefall inside her stomach. She stood gaping, one hand on the doorknob. She tried to speak, but nothing came out of her mouth. The blood was pumping around her chest, forcing itself up her neck and thundering through her skull and her legs were suddenly weak, as if they might give way beneath her.

‘Who is it?’ Eleanor called, from inside the bedroom behind her.

‘Just… just someone,’ she said, her voice sounding squeaky in her own ears. She went out into the corridor and pulled the door shut behind her, leaning back on it to steady herself against a wave of giddiness. Her cheeks were burning, as if a hairdryer on its full heat setting was being pointed straight at her face.

‘What are you doing here?’ she whispered.

‘I was going to ask you the same thing!’ Jake looked as shocked as she felt.

‘God, it’s good to see you.’ The words were out of her mouth before she could stop herself. But it really was so good. Over the last day and a half, she had thought about this man almost constantly; she’d pictured his rich brown eyes and his neatly trimmed hair, speckled with grey, the fringe flopping across his forehead. She’d thought about his mouth, laughing as they talked, moving towards her to kiss her. When she closed her eyes, she found it hard to think about anything other than the strength of his arms as he held her and the way her stomach contracted as he ran his hand along it.

‘It’s good to see you too,’ he said.

She realised she was holding her breath as she stared at his face, inches from her own. She wanted to launch herself at him; throw her arms around his neck and hold him as tightly as she had done two nights ago. She wanted to run her hands through his hair and smell his skin, feel his cheek soft against her own.

But at the same time as her body was rebelling with desire for this other human being, her head was telling her this was all wrong. What was he doing here? How on earth had he tracked her down to this guest house? To this very door?

She was suddenly aware that she could hear movement in the room behind her. ‘Why are you here?’ she whispered. ‘How did you find me?’

‘I didn’t! I mean, I didn’t know you were here.’

She shook her head in confusion. Part of her didn’t care how or why he’d tracked her down, she was just ecstatic he had. She’d thought she would never see this man again. She’d been riddled with regret about running out of his room the previous morning, when she’d been in such a panic about Moira that she hadn’t even said goodbye. But ever since she’d left him behind, she’d been telling herself it was just one of those things. She’d had a one-night stand; the man in question was bloody gorgeous.
