Ellwood watched his little group carefully. Korren was the only one who seemed completely at ease with him. There was mistrust in Seraphina, unease in Idell and anger in Malini. It was an ill-assorted group to be sure, but he had no doubt of their commitment to what they had set out to do. Malini might have no attachment to her sisters, but she had no interest in seeing them prisoners or to have them sacrificed. Ellwood’s spell had ensured that mages couldn’t enslave magicals to use them, but physical captivity was still possible. It would still need a lot of power, but he was certain the mages had it. After all, these were aspirants to being part of the Brotherhood. They were no novices.

He could hope to keep his hands clean of blood this time, but he did not believe it. Korren’s red eyes met his across the clearing. Malini and they were mostly in their human forms, likely to put him at ease. Well, maybe Malini was trying not to spook her elf lover. It was strange, seeing her accept him as such. Ellwood knew very little of her kind, but he knew enough to know how rarely they took an actual lover. He wasn’t sure if feelings were involved on her part. He could hope they weren’t on Idell’s. Seraphina made no secret of her disapproval of the whole thing.

Korren approached him. “How do you feel?”

“Better.” Ellwood moved over to make space for the phoenix on the log he was sitting on. It should have been boring, sitting here with nothing to do, but it was oddly peaceful. “I might be able to cast the seeking spell in a day or two.”

“And you will go home after?” Korren turned their head to look at him, their eyes as unfathomable as ever.

“That’s the plan,” Ellwood said, feeling slightly uncomfortable with the phoenix’s scrutiny. It felt as if they could see into Ellwood’s soul and see the lie he was uttering.

“Or you could go to Aderin,” Korren said softly. “Try and earn his forgiveness.”

“I’m not sure I deserve it, after everything,” Ellwood admitted.

He wasn’t sure what changed but being with Korren seemed to clear his head in a way nothing ever had. Looking back, he could see what a fool he had been. He had broken Aderin’s heart time and again, and now that he was ready to make amends, he was not sure if Aderin would even want to see him.

“Is that going to stop you from trying?” Korren asked.

Ellwood was unable to look away. “No,” Ellwood said quietly. “I have to try . . . even if . . . even if there’s no hope, I have to try.”

Korren smiled. “I never thought you were good for him,” they said. “Back when we were your slaves. Even knowing what you two were to each other, I thought he deserved better. I was angry at you, but then you nearly died casting that spell, and he… he was the only one you allowed into your wards.
