Chapter 17

Ninety minutes. That’s how long it took Garden and Chase to walk back to Main Street. It would have gone faster if they had been able to activate the GPS on their phones. The complete lack of cell service also kept them from ordering a car to pick them up.

“These shoes cost three-hundred and fifty dollars,” Chase said, limping faster now that they could see heavier traffic and more signs, clear evidence of civilization. “And I have filled them with blood.”

“Think of it as genetically bonding with them.” Garden hoped an attempt at humor would distract her from her aching sciatica.

“Can we stop soon?” Chase pleaded in a high, weak voice.

“First coffee shop we see,” Garden promised. But then she saw something better than a coffee shop. It was a Bentley limousine in ox-blood red. “That’s the Yuen’s driver, Harry. He’s a good guy.”

“Oh, thank goodness,” said Chase.

The car slowed down, and the front passenger window descended. “Would you like a ride somewhere?” Harry asked, his head angled awkwardly so he could see Garden.

“Harry, you’re a savior,” she said. “Could you take us to the Café & Stay on Main Street, please?” When Garden heard the locks click, she opened the back door and gestured to Chase. “Rest your weary bones in luxury, old friend.”

Chase crawled in and lowered himself into the plush seat with a grateful huff. “I would say I resent being called ‘old,’ but I admit I’m kinda feeling it right now.”

No place had ever looked more welcoming than the lobby and coffee shop of the Café & Stay. It was humming with business, even though it was noon on Friday. Sara Beth, busy with customers at the registration desk, gave Garden and Chase a wave and a smile. Lenny balanced on a step stool, fixing a wall sconce. The café section was under the efficient control of a young woman who looked barely twenty. Garden ordered two mocha lattes and a roast beef panini, while Chase collapsed at the only available table.

“I thought this was a bed and breakfast,” Garden said as she put down their drinks and food. “Aren’t they supposed to feed you?”

“Yes, yes. Sara Beth gave me little tickets to use at the café.”

“And you lost them.”

Chase waved his hand in annoyance. “I am not built to keep track of small scraps of paper.”

“True.” Garden took a sip of her coffee. “Back to the Benny alibi situation. What do we do next?”

“Tell the cops?” Chase suggested without much conviction. “Oops!” The table wobbled, making his latte splash into its saucer.

“Hang on.” Garden got up and looked around until she spotted Lenny, who had moved on to another sconce. “Hey, Lenny, do you have something we could put under our table leg?”

He turned and grinned at her. “No problem. Be right there.”

“So, do you think we should tell the police?” Chase asked when she sat down again.

“I feel like that’s tipping our hand,” said Garden. “I saw how that detective fawned over Benny.
