Chapter 6

We were brought to Eiratha by the gods of this world to subdue this untouched soil in their image. They chose us as their champions, tasking us to bring forth our expertise to lead these brutes into a brighter future.

‘Be fruitful,’ be industrious. ‘Multiply,’ and conquer the land.

Whence we came, our ancestors built great empires on the backs of collective enterprise and slavery. We created structures to break the will of people, turning them into less than creatures. Here, we simply show these villagers flashy magic, how to wield a sword or teach them to wield a crossbow, and they believe the gods have finally answered their prayers.

Their lives before we Dragonslayers came along were so bleak that convincing even the most reluctant is a matter of promising them a consistent hot meal.

It is a sign from the gods that we were granted dominion over such simple beasts when brought to this world. Any beasts who do not fall in line, who do not obey and align with our beliefs of a new, restored Eiratha, such as Dragons and their Kobold minions, we classify as monsters.

Some people, mostly those who have yet to properly integrate into our ranks, have differing opinions. What is sentience? What about reproduction? If it can reproduce, think, and converse with us, we shouldn’t have control over it.

Yet, people often fail to think twice about the subjugation of plants and animals for agricultural purposes. We’re so happy in front of our fires in winter eating our sponge cakes and strawberries soaked in sugar shipped from the Stata’Cona Islands, we forgot that we have already subjugated the land.

What’s wrong with wanting more? Providing for more, providing more opportunity.

It is far more dangerous to let those with intelligence live. They are better off dead before they become a true threat to our absolute regime.
