The area beyond the greatbat’s roost had fallen in. Upon moving along one of the walls, we found another passage that continued west. It was a natural hollow, much narrower than the first corridor, only about three meters across and high. At least, it looked like an organic formation. I had no reason to suspect otherwise until Troach almost dropped into an elaborately constructed pitfall.

We heard the shriek after going about two hundred meters. Troach hung from the side of the hole with only one hand. I understood why after rushing over. Her other arm was holding on to the girl in charge of communicating, who was dangling. (Her name, I’d heard, was Kanlo.)

The hole was clearly man-made. It had been constructed to come apart from the middle and drop whoever was on top of it inside. Sharpened sticks were waiting to meet you at the bottom.

“Crap, crap, I can’t hold on!” groaned Troach, clenching her teeth.

The pitfall’s cover, which had opened up from either side, slowly started to reset via some mechanism. The thick sheets of rock were moving in. If Troach let go, she and Kanlo were dead, and if her hand got caught in the two halves of the cover, she’d have to drop.

I swiftly checked all around the pitfall. It could have been a double trap meant to maim or kill whoever tried to help the victims. Not seeing anything of that nature, I got down on my stomach and reached for Troach’s arm. I grabbed it not a moment before her fingers slipped off the edge of the hole.

“Hang on—I’ll pull you up.”

“Wait! Kanlo! Wrap your arms and legs around my leg! Do not let go!”
