In the bright sanctuary of his office, Slick stared down at the medical reports on his desk and frowned. The sultry voice of Cassandra Wilson rose like smoke from the speakers on the bookshelf that stood against the far wall, but it brought him no comfort, no relief from the stress that had been building since the night before, when he'd received a call from Al Dyson.
The medical records on the deaths of Marc Cohen and Adam Shefts were embarrassingly slim. On the other hand, the doctor who had been treating Jason Castillo at the time of his supposed death had been quite thorough. Slick had even talked to her on the phone. The infuriating part of it all, the part that embarrassed him, though he would never speak of it to anyone, not even Dyson, was this: according to those records, Jason Castillo was dead.
But if that were the case, Dyson would not have seen him walk out of the morgue the previous afternoon. He was obviously not available for tests, to find the origin of this miraculous turn of events, and neither could such tests be made from blood taken during his illness. The records of the tests that had been run at the time were certainly still available, but they were nowhere near enough to answer Slick's questions. Worse yet, the autopsy on Marc Cohen hadn't produced any information that was helpful to them at all.
Or did it?
Slick wheeled himself out from behind his desk and over to the filing cabinet where he kept folders on any case he still considered active. It was a simple matter to pull a file on Cohen. All of the path lab results were in there. And Slick found was he was looking for.
Datura. It was a poison, though since Cohen was shot to death it had nothing to do with his demise.
So what was he doing with datura in his system?
It wasn't much, particularly when he had no way to see if the other two men had the substance in their system as well. But it was a start.
Dyson appeared in the doorway, interrupting his thoughts with a quick knock.
"Walter, you have a visitor," Dyson explained.
Slick raised an eyebrow at the grin on Dyson's face. But then the other doctor stood aside, and Jenna Blake walked into his office. Despite the smile on her face, she seemed uncomfortable, even a bit nervous.
"Jenna!" Slick said happily, propelling his chair toward her. "What a nice surprise. I was just thinking about you a little while ago. Are you just paying us a social visit, or have you finally realized the error of your ways and come back to join us again?"
When he saw Jenna flinch, Slick felt immediately guilty. "I'm sorry, Jenna," he said. "I was only teasing you. It's nice to see you, as always. What can I do for you?"
With a shy smile, Jenna met his gaze. "Well, you can give me my old job back."
Slick leaned back in his chair and stared at her in astonishment.
