Chapter 16

“Who should we speak to first?” I asked as we walked out of the library and bumped into Miles. Liam smiled. “Hey, dad. Do you have a minute?”

He smiled, and I noticed how much he and Liam look alike. Is this what Liam will look like in twenty-five years? Still very good looking with a full head of grey hair? I’d take it.

“Why don’t we head to my office?” We followed him down the hall, and through the door I hadn’t noticed until yesterday. I’m sure there were probably many additional rooms I hadn’t seen yet. It was a castle, after all. I wonder if there are any priest holes. The holes where priests hid from Cromwell and his men when they were destroying anything and everything Catholic.

His office was of medium size, decorated in black leather and dark bookcases. His desk took up most of the room, sitting back up against the window. Other than a laptop, a stapler, and a picture of his family, it was bare. He sat down behind the desk and motioned us to sit in the two comfortable chairs in front. As I sat, the smell of lemon hit my nostrils. Furniture polish? I looked around and smiled. There was a yellow candle sitting on a low shelf behind him, under the window. That must be it.

“What can I do for you two?” He moved some papers to the corner and folded his hands on top of the desk.

Liam sat up and put his elbows on his knees, his hands folded in front of him, almost in prayer. “I heard from Ben. Sean Hanson has an alibi. He was in Belfast robbing a grocery store at the time of granddad’s death. He didn’t do it.”

His father sat back in his executive style chair and let out a deep sigh. “I was hoping… well, it doesn’t matter. So now what?”

Liam sighed too. “Ben starts over. They’ll re-question everyone, and hope they get a lead.”

“That’s why we wanted to speak to you. I know Ben has spoken to you, but we were wondering if you saw anyone leave the ballroom after your father did on Saturday night.”

He picked up a stapler and began playing with it. “I’m glad you two are going to look into this.” He smiled. “Hannah showed me those online articles.” He dropped the stapler and sat back. “To be honest, I don’t remember seeing anyone leave, but I wasn’t paying attention. There were several people there I hadn’t seen in a while, and we were catching up.”

“Do you remember where you were between half-past nine and ten-ten? Or who you were talking to?” Liam asked.

Miles’ face froze. “You think I killed my father?”

I grabbed Liam’s hand. “Of course not. We’re just trying to figure out where everyone was and what they might have seen without realizing it around the time of the murder.”

His brows furrowed. “I remember at one point your mother met me at the bar and we had a drink together.
