Randi blushed under the blaze of admiration in Jenna’s blue eyes. “Thank you, but I said that to point out what a dismal failure I would be as an administrator. We all have unique talents and abilities. Dean Harrelson started out, if I recall, as a piano and music theory teacher and earned a promotion to Dean of the Fine Arts department. It turns out administration was his forte. I wouldn’t know what to do with accounts and financial planning, meeting with alumni and politicking for donations. Intelligence is the raw ability to solve problems; skill in a given field is far, far different. I find it evident that you are extremely intelligent, Jenna, which is probably why you were promoted. But your advancement was to a position still within the realm of law enforcement. Teaching and administrating are two entirely disparate things.”

Jenna nodded. “I suppose you are right, and thanks, by the way. I don’t guess I often think of myself as smart since I didn’t make many good grades in school. But according to your definition of intelligence as problem solving, well, I am rather proficient at that. So, Harrelson was a piano player.” Jenna laughed. “I would have never guessed.”

“People will surprise you.”

Jenna polished off the last of her coffee as an inquisitive expression crossed her face. She licked her lips and blurted out, “So, is there a Mr. Dr. McLeod?”

The question sent a thrill shooting through Randi, who was finding herself more attracted to this cop with every passing moment. She had felt it before, often even, upon meeting an interesting, attractive woman, but they always turned out to be straight—totally into guys. Then again, this was the first time she had coffee with a police detective, a stereotypically male profession. A sudden ache from somewhere deep inside longed for Jenna to surprise her.

“No,” she responded with a subtle smile tugging at her lips. “I was engaged once, to a rather cute nerd, one of our math professors, but...” How exactly to put this? “We decided we made better friends than lovers.” Pleased with the ambiguity of her response, Randi threw the query back at Jenna. “And how about you? Anyone special in your life?” She had already observed that Jenna wore no ring, but that wasn’t a sure indicator.

A bittersweet expression came over Jenna. “No,” she muttered with a sigh. “It is hard for me to sustain a relationship. I can be rather intense and bossy, and being a cop and all, there’s the stress, the odd hours, the always being on call. For example, my last girlfriend broke up with me after just a few months when I had to cancel a date because of an emergency. She said I didn’t pay enough attention to her or make her a priority and that she couldn’t deal with me constantly changing plans at the last minute.” A sadness crept into Jenna’s expression that tugged at Randi, compelling her to race to the detective’s defense.

“What an immature, self-absorbed little twit!” Randi exclaimed with annoyed anger in her voice.
