Chapter Eleven

Trey made one last check of his carry-on.

Two magazines. His laptop. Noise-canceling headphones. A change of clothes—just in case. Sunglasses. Passport. His heart.

He’d thought leaving his mother was going to be tough, but she’d made things easy. Almost too easy. In some ways, Mom was acting as though he was headed to summer camp, not to a major career change on the other side of the country.

He didn’t know why she suddenly seemed so comfortable with him going, but he’d take the change of heart because something told him saying good-bye to Amber wasn’t going to be as angst-free.

Amber. Was he ready to say goodbye? They both thought they’d have another day, but while his mother was in the doctor’s office, Dad’s secretary called with “good” news. “I was able to get you on an earlier flight. Red-eye tonight. First class. Can you make that work?”

He could, but did he want to? Would prolonging the inevitable serve either of them better? “Send me the flight info. I’ll be there.”

Every minute since he and Mom returned to Baubles had been spoken for—packing, making arrangements for his furniture to be shipped to New York, and figuring out the logistics of where he’d be staying once he arrived. Unfortunately, he’d let his battery run down to the point where it died mid-text. By the time he had power and tried calling Amber, she didn’t pick up.

He texted his mother. Do you or Rosemary know where I can find Amber? Not answering her phone.

Mom called instead of texting. “Amber and the TV crew are on their way here. Dinner is in forty-five. You’re still coming, aren’t you?”

“You know I don’t believe in eating a heavy meal before a flight, but I’ll be there. I’m ordering an Uber next.” He’d promised his mother he’d take a bite or two of whatever she and Rosemary had cooked up, but the main reason he’d agreed to go was to say good-bye to the woman he hadn’t been able to get out of his head all day.

Last night had been one of the best in his life. Granted they’d both gone into the date with no expectations of a serious relationship springing to life from a few sexy embers that might still be smoldering. But, he owed Amber more than an “adios” text from the tarmac.

He set up a ride, then locked Baubles and stepped outside. Still early evening, the warmth felt life-affirming. The relatively quiet hubbub of Main Street carried an easygoing vibe. No horns honking—unless to alert another driver of some hazard. In New York, horn honking was another language—with mostly four-letter words.

His phone made a noise that told him his driver was approaching. A Subaru SUV turned the corner. In the third-row seating area, two versions of child car seats sat. The driver was a younger man with a baby face. “Are you, Trey?”

“I am. I’m not going far, but I didn’t want to tote my luggage.”

The boy got out of the car and opened the rear hatchback.
