Chapter 8

Jolie

“But you have been talking to the police?” Paul leaned forward in his chair, scowling his disapproval.

Jolie nodded. “Only because the detective insisted.”

“What do you mean, ‘insisted’?” Paul asked.

She explained what Althea had told them. “I had no choice. Detective Ken called me at work and asked me to lunch. When I tried to refuse, he said he thought I’d rather do that than go downtown to be questioned. I did and we talked.”

“So, what is your connection to this dead woman?” Ann asked.

“I have no idea. And so far, neither do the police.”

“Oh, for Pete’s sake,” Ann sputtered. “They took the word of this woman seriously? They questioned you when they had no evidence and upset you for nothing?”

Jolie shrugged. “I suppose they have to check out every lead to see if it goes somewhere, even if it’s not promising.”

“Especially when they have nothing at all to go on, so they just go fishing?” Paul asked, a scowl creasing his forehead.

Jolie smiled at him. “Well, for once you sound like you’re on my side, Paul.”

“Of course, I’m on your side, Jolie. You’re family.” He turned to Bart with a serious look on his face. “So, did your detective friend figure out anything about who broke into her apartment or who followed you?”

“Not yet,” Bart admitted. “They’re working on it.”

Paul’s gaze swung back to Jolie. “Did you find anything missing? Or a mess? Or what?”

Jolie shook her head. “The door lock was broken, but nothing else seemed to have been damaged or taken. But I could tell that my phone messages had been accessed on my answering machine and when I checked my laptop, my e-mail had been downloaded and read.”

Ann tipped her head and raised an eyebrow. “Why would they want to hear or read your messages?”

Jolie shrugged her shoulders. “At first I thought maybe it was someone who wanted to find out what I was working on for Cameron. I often do work at home. But if so, wouldn’t they have simply made copies of my work? Or broken into my office at Cameron Company?”

“I’d think so,” Paul said, more thoughtful now.

“But reading my e-mail and listening to my phone messages at my apartment, suggests to me that they were more interested in my personal life.”

“Well, whoever it was, that is very upsetting,” Paul agreed. “Promise me you’ll be extra careful.”

“I will, Paul.”

“But I still don’t see what this has to do with our girls,” Ann said.

“Neither do I, Ann,” Jolie agreed. “But Althea keeps insisting the danger is to a little girl. And in my dreams, the man is always chasing a little girl. And your girls are the only ones in my family, so it makes sense to think there’s a connection to them, too, don’t you think?”

Ann and Bart both nodded. Even Paul looked worried now, and said, “Well, when you put it that way...”

“Exactly, Paul.” Jolie said. “So, will you please be careful? Keep an extra close eye on those precious girls?”

Paul nodded reluctantly.
