Chapter 18
Will
Isettle into the couch with my wine. Miraculously, Zia is here with me. Alone. My Sunday evening is turning out infinitely better than expected. Sheâs got leggings on that show off every muscle in her powerful legs and a cozy-looking hoodie. Her dark curls are piled on top of her head with this hair tie that looks like a phone cord. Itâs purple, of course.
âPurpleâs your favorite color?â
âSure is. Nonna always told me purple looked good with my eyes when I was growing up. So even now, as an adult, it makes me feel special.â
âI think itâs the other way around. Your beautiful eyes make purple look good.â
âThank you,â she says simply and holds my gaze with her aforementioned eyes, the tiniest bit of pink creeping up her cheeks.
Those ice-blue eyes make my dick ache. I want to look into her eyes every day. I want to wake up to her eyes first thing in the morning. And I want to say good night to those eyes at night. I want her so badly. I wonder if she feels the same? Could she want me, too? I know she wants someone who is staying in Whitespell forever. Someone like Caleb. But weâve shared two kisses so far. Two kisses that put all the other kisses in my life to shame. Two kisses filled with passion and desire. Two kisses that made me question my life choices.
"Tell me about where you grew up. Iâve only been to Whistler once, but it was amazing,â Zia says as she tucks her feet under her.
âWell, my hometownâs about forty-five minutes from the mountain, so not as perfect of a location as Whitespell.â
Zia looks pleased with this nod to the awesomeness of her own hometown.
âThe resort ran buses after school to the mountain through the winter. Weâd all pile in the bus with our gear, excited to be done with class and thrilled to get on the mountain.â
âThose were the days, huh? All your friends on the mountain.â Zia jiggles her knees on the couch, looking at me over her wineglass.
âYes! I spent so much of my formative years at the mountain. Even my first kiss was on a ski lift.â
âOh, my god! Me too!â she exclaims.
âWith Caleb?â I ask but instantly regret it. I donât need to know this.
âYes, with Caleb,â she says tentatively, looking down at the floor. But then she steers the conversation back to me. âTell me about your parents.â
A hint of jealously winds its way through my heart at the mention of Caleb, especially since I know he is back in Whitespell for good.
âTheyâre both retired now, but my mum was a schoolteacher. Third grade. And my dad was a union electrician. They had me later in life, so they never were the âcool parentsâ which I resented growing up. They both are hardworking, and they made sure we had what we needed. There wasnât a lot left over for travel or adventure. Just the same old drudgery.â
âIs that why you live the way you do? Always moving on?â Zia asks a valid question.
