Stuffed from a delicious Thanksgiving meal, I waited in the living room with Hazel’s dad while she got herself ready for the annual ball club Thanksgiving party. Shelby and Carmen had gone home shortly after dessert.

“So, are there going to be a lot of MVPs at this party?” Hank only bothered to talk to me whenever there was a commercial playing.

“Just the team and some of the staff. The GM will be there this year. It’s not a big deal, really. It’s just a little party for whoever’s around.”

Hank nodded. The game was back on. The conversation was over. Knowing this, I checked the status of my bowtie. This was the first time that Hazel would see me all dressed up and really, I wanted to knock her socks off — to show her that I was more than just a man who could swing a bat relatively well. I could clean up well, too.

I was fixing my pocket square when I heard Hazel coming down the stairs. The click of her heels made me stand at attention. Then, I saw her and my jaw literally hit the ground. “Hazel…” I gasped. “You look amazing.”

“You think so?”

“I thought you told me that you had nothing to wear.” I took her hand as she came off the bottom step. She wore a bright red dress that complemented everything about her. It hugged her waistline and flared at her knees. Her legs looked longer — skin silky smooth. She looked like a model that had escaped a 50s magazine. “Damn. I can’t bring you to this party.”

She frowned. “Is it my hair?”

“You’re way out of my league.” I took the rose that I had given her that morning and handed it to her. “But if you will take me as your humble date, then I am ready to go.”

I could feel the heat rising from her cheeks as they became the same color as her lipstick.

“Dad, are you going to be okay staying here on your own?”

“Humph,” answered Hank.

“Talking to him while the game is on is pretty impossible,” I said. “Trust me, I tried.”

“And you’re okay with this?”

“Are you kidding? I’ll be walking into the stadium with the smartest, most interesting — not to mention beautiful — woman in the world. I would be a total idiot to leave you behind.”

She rested her hand on my chest and leaned forward, trying to hide her face so I wouldn’t see how her cheeks had become even darker. “Right, but I thought you wanted to keep things between us on the quiet side. I mean it's one thing to hold my hand in town, but at the stadium… Won’t there be paparazzi and tabloid reports at this event?”

“There shouldn’t be, but if they happen to sneak through, I wouldn’t mind. It would be a crime to keep a sweet gal like you a secret.” I dared to give her a quick peck on the lips. Luckily, her lipstick was kissproof and I didn’t pull back looking like some sort of clown.
