CHAPTER 13

“What did you think about Jenkins?” Herc asked as we drove away from the funeral home.

“He answered our questions, but I suspect there’s more going on in that marriage than he wanted to let on. He was worried about what Carrie would think of his talking to us. Why? She’s the one who was so bent on our finding the killer right away.”

“I had the same reaction. Any idea what’s going on there?”

What all had we learned from Carrie Jenkins? “If I had to describe her in three words, I’d say determined, demanding and unrepentant. Not exactly a grieving daughter, but then, as we learn over and over, we all experience grief in different ways. When Ben died, I had a difficult time getting out of bed every morning. But then, he wasn’t killed, except by cancer.”

“I wouldn’t’ve picked those exact words, although I don’t disagree. I say Carrie Jenkins is a bright woman who hasn’t been able to use her brain as much as she’d like. That’s eaten away at her disposition. Made her hard and unforgiving.”

Interesting assessment. “With her mother even?” I asked.

“Possibly. We certainly can’t dismiss her as a suspect yet. Nor the husband. He’d have even more cause to kill his mother-in-law, if she continued to have any influence over Carrie. I need to get back to Janet, see what she’s discovered about the Foster woman’s finances. I suspect she managed to tuck away quite a bit over the years. Even after paying for that condo, there may have been enough left for Carrie or her husband or either of them to think they should have it.”

“Is Janet looking into the Jenkinses’ finances also?”

“Yeah. Since you were there, we’ve added a few online services that provide most of the financial info we need about suspects. We don’t need warrants, unless we need specific access to bank records or security boxes.” He noted the frown I’d attempted to hide. “I know, we should’ve had that information by now, but Janet’s been occupied tracking down the suspects. Resources at the department, as you recall, are limited.”

“Want to go back to your office and see what we can dig up on our own so Janet can finish tracking down the other suspects?”

He pulled out his phone. “I’ll check in with her now. I’d rather we spend our time talking to people, this Sara Steele woman or whatever she calls herself now, in particular, rather than doing research back in the office.”

Was he attempting to keep a low profile on my serving as his partner, even though it was only temporary? I debated whether to press. In the end, I held my tongue. I didn’t want to put him in an awkward position with the rest of his co-workers.

We grabbed lunch on our way out of town to the address Sara Steele had given us. I wasn’t convinced we’d actually find her at the address she’d provided or if such a place even existed. It might have been a ploy to escape us.
