ELEVEN

I was the first to arrive at Flannigan’s Pub for our monthly girls’ night out. Flannigan’s was a cool Irish pub with rich wood, low lighting, gorgeous pictures of Ireland on the walls, and an Irish band playing in the corner of the dance floor. Old-fashioned Irish pub food sent aromas throughout the bar, making my stomach growl.

Flannigan’s was my favorite spot to hang out. The elders of our Greek families rarely frequented the place, but all our cousins did. It was nice knowing there was a place to escape the mamas, especially during spring fever.

I pulled out a sanitized wipe and discreetly wiped off a stool before sitting at the bar where Silas’s girlfriend Zena tended bar. She spotted me then poured a glass of chardonnay and carried it over.

“Right on time as usual.” She smiled wide, her mischievous eyes sparkling.

People thought she was a pushover with her petite size and short blond pixie hairdo, but she could hold her own with her bold personality. She was the only woman who had ever been able to keep my charming cousin in line.

“Being late would give me anxiety.” I shuddered in mock exaggeration and took a sip of my chardonnay.

She laughed. “I’m the same way.” Then she arched a blond brow high. “I guess your cousin didn’t inherit that trait.”

“Why, is he supposed to be here?” I looked around but didn’t see Silas or any of my other first cousins.

She glanced at her watch. “He was going to stop by first before he and Kosmos went down the street to Clearview Cigar Bar. They don’t want to intrude on girls’ night, but Silas wanted to see me since we’ve been so busy lately.”

“Smart man.” I winked.

Right on cue, Silas led the way in front of Kosmos and Winnie, with a guilty look on his face. “Sorry, doll face. Kos made me go through inventory with him before he would let us call it a night.” He walked behind the bar as if he owned the place, wrapped Zena in his arms, then gave her a bear hug and big kiss.

“Quit harassing my best lass, Ballas,” Michael Flannigan said as he walked out of his office and stepped behind the bar. The note of humor in his tone lessened the severity of his mock scowl.

Silas held his hands in the air and widened his eyes dramatically. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, Flannigan.”

Zena laughed and shooed him out from behind the bar. “You can make it up to me later, Casanova.”

“If someone had done his job earlier like I asked him, we wouldn’t be late,” Kosmos interjected, steering the conversation back to us.

“We’re here now, mate, and that’s all that matters.” Winnie, the tall, voluptuous redhead, leaned over and kissed Kosmos then slid onto the stool beside me.

“Have fun, ladies.” Kosmos waved, and then the men left to join Nik and Boomer for cigars and poker down the street.

“What’d I miss?” Winnie asked.

“Nothing much. Just waiting on Jaz, Leni, and Thalia.
