“Do you think we need to talk to Jennifer?” Dora asked Evie as they walked into Windy’s cabin. The scent of charred steak filled the air, making Dora’s stomach rumble. How long had it been since she’d eaten? She couldn’t remember.

“About Gifford?” Evie asked, putting a wet Sunshine on the floor. They’d stopped at the barn and given the pup a bath before they’d made their way back into the house.

“Yeah. If Gifford did take the horse because of some rivalry, then his mistress might know something about it.” Dora eyed the kitchen and spotted Sam at the counter, busy chopping vegetables. If she wasn’t on the run for a crime she didn’t commit and determined to clear her name, she could really get used to living in Montana if it came with regular dinners prepared by Sam.

“Yeah, we can do that,” Evie said. “Since we know about the affair, maybe that would give us a little leverage to pry some information out of her.”

“You mean blackmail?” Dora asked, raising one eyebrow. “Don’t you think that’s a little… harsh?”

“Dor! If she helped Gifford steal a racehorse, blackmail about an affair is the least of her worries.”

Evie had a point, but it still made Dora uncomfortable.

The now familiar thud of boots hitting the wood floor sounded behind them. Dora turned and spotted Luke and Trace headed straight for them. Luke held up a flash drive and said, “Blackmail won’t be necessary. I’ve got security footage. Hopefully it will tell us everything we need to know.”

Dora let out a gasp. “The video of Bandit’s stall that supposedly implicates Sam?”

“Yep.” Luke walked over to the table and pulled a laptop from his messenger bag.

“How did you get your hands on that?” As far as Dora knew that video was police property now, and she couldn’t imagine how Luke had managed to not only get it but bring it to the cabin.

“I don’t kiss and tell,” Luke said with a wink.

Dora’s nostrils flared at the implication he had sweet-talked some woman before it hit her that he was using a figure of speech, and she shook her head at herself. She might be taking her role as a pageant queen a little too seriously.

Luke fired up his computer and inserted the drive, and Sam came over to watch along with Dora, Evie, Windy, Luke and Trace.

“That’s a ponytail bobbing on that woman’s head,” Evie said.

“Or man,” Sam offered, considering he sported one himself, although his ponytail was low on his neck and didn’t sway when he walked.

“Whomever it is sure knows their way around horses,” Dora commented as they watched the person stroking Bandit and feeding him what she thought was an apple.

“That’s pretty much everyone around these parts,” Windy said.

Dora sighed, realizing she had stated the obvious.

“Hold on,” Evie said. “Back that up again.”

Luke stopped the video and rewound it about twenty seconds. Evie pointed at the screen. “Freeze.” She looked at Dora and pointed at the person’s pants. That’s the signature pocket of Rockstar jeans.
