Chapter 50
Lilly and Hassan got into Hassanâs car and pulled up behind Drew. âAre you being a little tough on her?â Hassan asked gently.
âNo. Honestly, if I had ever behaved like that and my mother saw me, she would have knocked me right into the next week.â
âShe would, youâre right,â he said with a chuckle. âBut donât forget, theyâre young. Lots of kids behave like that.â
âI know,â Lilly said with a sigh. âI just didnât expect Laurel to be one of them. It was disgusting.â
Drew led the way back to Juniper Junction. Lilly had hoped that the drive would calm her down, but she was still fuming when Hassan pulled up in front of her house. Laurel was already waiting for her on the sidewalk.
She leaned over and kissed Hassan lightly on the lips. âWish me luck.â
âGood luck. And donât forget, sheâs just a kid.â
âA kid with a lesson to learn.â
âLet me know how it goes.â Hassan pulled away from the curb. Drew had already left.
Laurel was glaring at Lilly. âThat was so embarrassing, Mom.â
âDonât start.â She pointed at the front door. âInside.â
Laurel stomped up the steps. Lilly unlocked the door and Barney leapt around the vestibule to greet them. Lilly laughed in spite of herself. âBarney, we missed you, too.â
Laurel knelt down on the floor to hug the dog.
âSit.â Lillyâs instruction was to Laurel, not Barney.
Laurel sat on the sofa and gave her mother a baleful look.
âThis will go much better if you donât look daggers at me like that,â Lilly said. âIâm already in a bad mood and itâs only going to get worse if you donât change your attitude.â
Laurel managed to wipe the look off her face. She sighed and sat back. âAll right. What do you want to tell me?â
Hassanâs words echoed in Lillyâs ears. She wanted to kick herself for listening to advice from a man with no children, but he had a point.
âLaurel, I get it. Youâre young, youâve got a new boyfriend, you donât care who knows it. But really, to behave that way in a public place is just unacceptable. It was gross. I had to listen to those wet, sucking noises the whole time I was on the peak. It ruined my enjoyment of the meteor shower.â
âRuined it? Really?â
Lilly ignored the sass in Laurelâs voice. âYes, really. I would have enjoyed it so much more if I hadnât been subjected to the displays of lust playing out next to me.â Laurel squirmed at Lillyâs words.
âIâm sorry,â she finally mumbled.
âJust donât do it again. Itâs fine to kiss Drew, but when youâre in public you need to take it down a notch. Or two. Or three.â
Laurel rolled her eyes. âFine. Can I go upstairs?â
âNot just yet. So that Iâm convinced you have learned your lesson, you canât see Drew for a week.â
âThatâs not fair!â Laurel cried.
âWould you rather I come up with something better?â
âNo.â
âAll right, then. One week. Then you may see him again.â
âI saw Tighe and Sally Anne eating each otherâs faces.
