WHEN SHE WOKE, IT WAS to again face the total darkness of her cell. Her jaw ached, and she felt lightheaded. She knew where she was by the scent of moist dirt and rock and the sound of dripping water. A sigh exploded at the thought of the futility of her attempt at escape. There were simply too many of them, and she was too far within their stronghold.

With effort, she halted tears that threatened to spill from her eyes and returned her mind to her goal of finding her mother, and the plan to do that and how to escape this prison.

The image of the priest once again came to her. Where was he in this monstrosity of a temple?

Maya remembered sitting on the hill outside of Berth with Teck. At his gentle urging, she’d been able to somehow see the priest. She’d felt as if she’d been right there with him—and she could have sworn he knew she was there, watching him. Maybe she could do it again. Maybe she could see him and maybe even communicate with him. She had to do something to save herself.

Maya relaxed against the wall. She took deep breaths and closed her eyes. She concentrated on the image of the priest and thought of the look of his face and how he’d moved. Her lips quirked in a small smile when his image filled her mind. He came easier this time, maybe because she’d already made contact once or maybe because she had a face this time.

In her mind, the priest, Patrick, was sitting in a beautiful courtyard. Lush plants—trees, flowering shrubs, and grasses surrounded him. The only sounds to break the silence were the distant call of birds. He sat on an ornate bench, and on his lap was an open book. Her thoughts touched him and, immediately, his eyes lifted from the book to scan his immediate area.

“Hello?” he asked the open air. He felt her presence but seemed unaware of where the sensations came from.

Maya concentrated harder. Was she only able to observe, or could she communicate with the priest? His reaction indicated his awareness of her, but if she couldn’t tell him of her needs, this connection wouldn’t do her any good. She took another deep breath and relaxed, taking her mind away from the cell with its sounds and smells of dank water, and into the garden where the priest sat. The smell of fresh air perfumed with the heavy scent of flowers came to her, pulling her deeper into her mind. She sank to lie prone on the dirt floor of her prison, her mind flying toward the sunlight and birdsong.
