CHAPTER 17

Lisa Finkle opened her front door, appearing bubbly and vibrant. “Maya, Jim, you made it. I’m so glad to see you.” She hugged both of them. “Follow me and I’ll show you to the bar.”

She led them into the living room where a three-piece band, consisting of three men in their thirties, played a lively jazz tune on a banjo, harmonica, and a drum set consisting of three metal pots of various sizes and two wooden spoons.

In the middle of the room a young, lanky, black woman, appearing to be slightly over six and a half feet tall stood in front of a young white man. The man appeared to be a couple inches over five feet tall. They were engaged in an animated discussion, with the black woman listening sedately as the man looked up to her, waving his left hand around as though he were conducting an orchestra as he babbled perpetually.

Against the near wall, stood a series of cherry wood shelving that rose seven feet high on both sides of a granite counter with a sink. Under the counter were two cabinets and a built-in mini fridge. On the right side of the bar, more than a dozen bottles of various sorts of liquor lined the shelves. On the left side were the glasses.

An elderly, petite woman in her early sixties stood in front of the counter. She had short grey hair and wore a black, single-button, pantsuit. She smiled at Maya and Snow as they drew near.

Lisa motioned toward her with her hand. “This is Helen, our bartender for the evening. She can make whatever drinks you want as long as it’s on the list on the counter there to the left of the sink. She’s still in training so it’s not a long list. Helen has thirty-six years of experience as a psychotherapist and a sex therapist…”

“But I’m not giving out any advice this evening,” Helen added. “Only alcohol.” She laughed.

Lisa smiled. “If you want beer, wine, or soft drinks, we have plenty of that in the refrigerator in the kitchen. “Help yourselves to the hors d'oeuvres on the dining room table. If you need anything else, let me know.”

With that she wandered off toward the band in the corner of the room. They had stopped playing, and appeared to now be drinking and discussing their next set.

“Tell me, what can I get for you two?” Helen asked, pleasantly.

Maya and Snow leaned over the list of drinks on the counter.

“I’ll have a greyhound,” Maya said.

“And I’ll have a gin martini,” Snow said. “Hold all the garnishments. I like everything simple, like me.”

Helen chuckled. “You’re the sort of customer I like.” She went to work on the drinks.

“How did Lisa coax you into tending bar for this gala event?” Snow asked.

“I always do this,” Helen replied. “Every time we have a cocktail party. “I’m trying to figure out if I want to change careers.”

“You’re a sex therapist?” Snow asked.

“Yes.”

“That’s quite a divergence.”

“Not that much really,” she said as she worked on the drinks.
