Luther and Lili’s backtracking brought them into a dense forest room they’d bypassed on their high-speed intercept course. Unlike the gloom and snow they’d encountered in other forest chambers, this room featured a bright blue sky and lush greenery. A convenient dirt path marked the way to the exit.

There was nothing worse than a straightforward chamber. Dungeons rarely wasted mana on creating something this elaborate without hoping to get something out of them.

Luther had avoided going in this direction earlier because it involved several more passages and turns to get to the boss room compared to the other path. Scattered moko corpses remained from the efforts of the pre-tragedy Celestial Hunters.

The sight of the corpses relaxed Luther. The dungeon had harvested at least some mana from the room.

Luther jogged down the path, keeping his spear at the ready. Lili followed, a hand hovering near her weapons belt.

“Something feels off.” She glanced at the trees. “I swear something’s watching us.”

“I was worried about that.” Luther slowed. “I’m looking for traps, but I haven’t found any yet. I wouldn’t trust this dungeon not to hide the traps or more monsters. You might be onto something with that hidden luck idea.”

Bushes rustled on either side of the path ahead of them. Lithe green-skinned women with pointed ears wearing grass-woven tops and skirts emerged from the bushes holding odd stubby spears that looked like leaves tied together using glowing string and tipped with bear fangs. The women also had several spears tied to their backs with the glowing string. Their iridescent wings unfurled as they stared at Luther and Lili with unsettling solid-black eyes and deep scowls.

“I was wondering why all we saw were mokos,” Lili said. “The dungeon Core must have wanted to get its mana’s worth out of this chamber. I can see why.”

Luther lifted his spear. “Vilas.”

Lili drew her daggers. “We don’t have time to mess around with them. Any ideas?”

“Ideas? Plenty. Good ideas? Those are in shorter supply.”

“Go with your best non-bad idea.”

“Kill them fast.”

Lili sighed. “I figured that’d be your answer.”

The vilas fluttered into the air, their wings beautiful and almost silent. They circled nearby trees and danced through the branches, their faces contorting with more hatred each passing second.

“Don’t suppose you monster ladies would let us through?” Luther asked. “Not that I’ve ever heard about anyone talking their way through vilas,” he added with a shrug. “Because we’re in a hurry, and you can’t beat us. We’re too strong for you. I hope your dungeon understood that.”

The vilas opened their mouths, and dissonant buzzing emerged. They darted through the branches and circled the area.

“That didn’t work,” Lili opined. “They seem angrier than before.”

“I didn’t say it would,” Luther replied. “You were right. Let’s make this quick.” He narrowed his eyes at a vila. “Let’s show them that flying doesn’t scare us. You go high. I’ll keep them focused low.”
