THE EVENING PASSED by quickly. Nic loved putting on his Santa suit, but equally loved taking it off. He was happy to be out of the hot suit and back into comfortable clothes. He sat back on the couch with Pablo and Marco at his side. Sara handed Nic a small wrapped gift. “Here’s an early gift for you dear.”

Nic accepted it with a suspicious smirk. He opened the gift with the help of the boys. “‘It’s The Santa Clause, with Tim Allen. I always wanted to see this movie.” He flashed Sara a smile. “Perfect after a night like this.” Sara returned his smile and put the movie in the VCR.

“I thought you’d like it.”

The boys snuggled with their blankets next to Nic. Sara joined them, holding a bowl of popcorn to share. The movie started and Nic was mesmerized as he watched the main character’s transformation into Santa Claus, but this transformation was without a wig or make-up crayons. By the end of the movie, the boys had fallen asleep on their parents’ laps. Sara looked over at Nic. He was weeping quietly. She raised her eyebrows. “Are you crying?”

Nic sniffled and wiped a tear that had fallen to his cheek.

“This is a comedy,” chuckled Sara.

“I know, but I can’t help it. He did what I’ve always wanted to do.”

“What do you mean, Nic?” whispered Sara, although she already knew.

“He turned into Santa Claus. The dad actually turned into Santa Claus. Hollywood transformed him.”

“You too can write your own movie and can turn into Santa,” she said with a smile.

Nic wiped his cheeks. “We’ve got to get these boys to bed,” he said. They gently carried the boys to bed, tucked them in, and walked towards their own bedroom.

“If you work hard enough at it, you might just be able to become Santa,” said Sara as they got into bed. “When you grow up, that is.”

Nic laughed. “Yes indeed, if I ever do grow up,” yawned Nic as his head eased into his pillow.
