Lava arches are common along the coast of the Wai‘anapanapa hike.

Waikamoi Nature Trail (8/10 mile loop)

Between the 9 and 10 mile markers on the Hana Highway. Two nature loops, one about 10 minutes, the other about 30 minutes make a pleasant diversion on the Hana Highway drive if you need to stretch your legs a bit, but it’s not worth driving out there just for this. This hike is good for families, and you gain, at most, 200 feet.

If you start from the left-most trail and work your way up the gradual incline, there are a few concrete benches scattered along the way. Sometimes there are nice views of the highway beneath you and the valley beyond. Patches of bamboo interrupt the hala, strawberry guava and huge, towering eucalyptus forest. At the intersection, either take a right (back to your car for the 10-minute hike) or left for the longer one. The latter eventually leads to a picnic area with BBQ . The sign there says END OF TRAIL , though, in fact, the path continues. When it forks, take a left and walk a few minutes, and it leads down to a stream and dam. The view is nice there despite the lack of water flowing over the cliff.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could hike 1/3 mile up the stream itself from here. It’s relatively flat, your feet will get wet, and it can get slick on the rocks. If you persevere, you come to a pretty 45-foot waterfall and pool in a natural amphitheater. Give yourself an extra hour or two for this side trip.

Back at the picnic area, on your way down to your car on a 4WD road, if you veer to the left, it leads to a small reservoir. Otherwise, continue back to your car.
