Chapter fourteen

“It’s time for you to be more transparent, Blanche,” Stacey demanded, getting straight to the point. “The more you can tell me, the sooner we’ll find your granddaughter.”

Blanche lifted her head to take in a breath of air. “I have no idea where she is or who’s taken her.”

Why do we always have to do things the hard way? AJ said, though she was staying out of sight so as not to upset their host.

“Hmmm… let’s begin with the odd message that was sent on Harvey’s cell phone, shall we?” Stacey stated, ignoring her familiar, even though she agreed with her.

Blanche looked at Stacey in confusion. “I don’t know what happened to Harvey’s cell phone. Where is it?”

This statement surprised Stacey. “Hasn’t the sheriff spoken to you about the message on the phone?”

Before Blanche answered, Edith entered the room with a tray full of refreshments. “I’m afraid she goes to pieces every time Sheriff Jackson tries to speak with my sister. This is all too much for her.”

Edith set down the tray and offered Stacey tea or coffee.

“Coffee, please, but if you don’t speak to the sheriff, how do you expect to find out who killed your husband?”

“Harvey?” Blanche questioned. “Where is he? Why isn’t he here dealing with all this upset?”

At this point, Edith gave Blanche a cup of tea, sitting at her other side with her arm stroking her back. “There now, Blanche, get that tea down you, and let’s start again,” Edith said, then turned to Stacey. “Give me a minute with her while you drink your coffee.”

“Sure, but has Blanche got memory problems?” Stacey asked.

“No, it’s the shock of it all, or so the doctor tells us,” Edith replied, turning back to get her sister's attention.

“Listen to me, Blanche. I need you to try to remember the day of Colleen’s wedding. That’s when Harvey died. God rest his soul.”

Blanche looked shocked, her eyes wide as if this was the first time she knew that her husband was dead. “Oh, poor Colleen. At her wedding, how? Have you told your friend what’s happened to Colleen, Edith?”

“I have. That's why she’s here, to help us, Blanche. But you have to concentrate and answer her questions the best you can,” Edith explained patiently to her sister.

Blanche turned to look at Stacey as if she’d only just noticed her. “What is it that you want to know?”

“I’m sorry, Blanche. I understand how painful this is for you. First, I want to know if you were considering selling any land to a realtor agency,” Stacey tried again.

“Yes, yes. Oh, that woman is dreadful. She keeps coming to my door, and Harvey sends her away. He didn’t know, you see,” Blanche revealed. “I never told him.”

Stacey wasn’t sure what Blanche was referring to, which her husband didn't know about. “What didn't Harvey know?”

“That the woman wanted to buy our holiday cabin and the land we own there,” Blanche disclosed. "He'd never sell it. That's his hunting cabin."

“Drink up a sip of your tea, Blanche," Edith encouraged, helping her sister to compose herself.
