Chapter Eleven

She still sniffled as he used cool water to clean his seed from her face. Her blushing was delightful, and he was somewhat surprised at the level of arousal her tears elicited.

A little domination was part of every sex act when he’d renewed his energies with the matakee-ra females—it was simply the way of things.

But with this human, it was different.

The power of his feeling was entirely new. Just as he felt the pull of her life force, confirming to him that she was meant to be there, his long-sought mate, at the same time it fired his lust, his possessive—even selfish—desire to force her to yield.

The defiance she displayed only made those urges stronger.

It was the natural order that a female mate would submit to the male—that wasn’t what was novel. Instead, it was the fact that it was much more than sexual, animal attraction coursing through him.

His very real fear—a virtually unknown emotion for him—at the prospect she’d run off, possibly getting herself hurt, or worse, was itself a sign of the depth of his need and desire for this curvy little human female.

Perhaps this was something unique to being in the presence of one’s mate?

Her face clean, her hair washed and appealingly damp, he tipped her chin up. “Feel better?”

She grimaced ever so slightly, then met his gaze. “A little.”

“What’s wrong then?”

“I don’t know... I just. All of this.” She looked down. “I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around what’s happened, I guess.”

“That will ease, in time.”

In fact, he would make it his mission to make her forget all about her previous life, to show her, in every way, that here was where she belonged. At his side—or at his feet.

At that moment, the latter held particular allure.

“Come with me,” he said, sweeping her up into his arms.

“Um... okay.”

She held onto his shoulders, and he smiled at the careful way she clung to him, avoiding the sharp horns there.

He walked to the wall of the cavern opposite the pool—then passed cleanly through the rock.

“Oh... what the fuck?”

He could feel her little heartbeat against his chest, the soft weight of her breasts against him threatening to fire his arousal up all over again. It wasn’t time for that though.

Yet.

“How did... you walked through the goddamned wall.”

“Did I though?”

She said nothing for a moment, then she whispered, as if to herself, “The wall wasn’t there, was it?”

“Only in your mind. Sufficient for my purposes.”

“You mean... you can control it? Create illusions?”

“That’s your word for it, yes.”

Fortunately, the passage to home wasn’t far. He brought her down through a winding series of caves, slowly descending again, the air warming as they went.

“How much?” Her tone had grown strained once more.

“I don’t understand your question.”

“I mean, how much of this—all of this—is an illusion?” She leaned back from his chest, looking up at him. “Are you an illusion? Please tell me.”

“Much of what you experience is based on your perception of it. Every being’s reality is, in a sense, an illusion specific to them.
