Suzanne is a really pretty girl who for some reason doesn’t realize just how pretty she is. She is five feet eight, with a boyish figure. Clothes fit her perfectly. She’s a brunette with a pixie-girl haircut and twinkly green eyes. I think she’s a little insecure, which should be good for my guy. I figure he will like her looks and she’ll be okay with his you-know-what. A perfect match.

DESPERADO #23

Mr. Teeth

Finally Mr. Teeth, my ex-date, decided to bite the bullet and hire me. And guess what? He got his teeth done. I’m sure he knew that he could never come sit down to hire me unless he got his teeth whitened, so he did it, and now here he was. As soon as he sat down, he flashed them at me and said, “Look what I did,” like a little boy looking for his mother’s approval. I clapped my hands in appreciation and told him that they looked great. Then he filled me in on the past few months. He had been dating a girl who grew up in Brooklyn and didn’t graduate from high school and worked a part-time job in a laundromat but had no other career aspirations. I frowned. What? Mr. Teeth, you are a double Ivy League graduate, an ambitious guy from Manhattan. What is up with that?

He told me that, because he was insecure when it came to his inexperience with women, it was easier to date uneducated girls who didn’t put so much pressure on him. I patted his hand. “Okay, Mr. Teeth, that was yesterday, but as of today, you are going to date educated, appropriate women who are sweet and kind and who will not make you feel insecure. I am going to find them for you and coach you on how to make the relationship work. Got it?” He looked at me with gratitude, smiled, and said okay.

Thursday, February 23

I got home and found that I had gotten fifteen responses to my profile on JDate. I spent some time looking at them. JDate is fun, at least it seems fun initially. E-mails pop up on my screen to say I have mail and then I get to go to the JDate site and see the e-mails that these guys have sent me. They all say that they think I sound great, which makes me feel really good. But…then I read about them, and they themselves are not so great and then it’s not really so much fun anymore. Oh well. Some are too young, some too old, some uneducated, some have written the most uninteresting profiles, and some can’t spell, which really bothers me. What happened to spell check? I realized that I need to be proactive and pick the guys, instead of letting them pick me. That might work better. So tonight I spent all night watching television and going through profile after profile and putting the good ones into a folder they call Your Favorites. I came up with fifty-three favorites after four hours.
