Chapter Sixteen

MIA

Scott Disrick is an asshole. One with too much cologne and ill-placed hair-plugs. That much is clear.

And I'm still not sure how I'm going to make it through the rest of this minute, let alone this dinner, sitting at his table.

Derek does his best to mitigate the published head's raging assholery. But I can tell it's hard.

That scruffed jaw of his continues to tick. But he tries to grin at me instead. I can tell it's an effort.

"This is the best meal I've had in Seattle," Scott shouts over the quiet hum of the restaurant.

"I think it's because you ate in a morgue last week," Derek comments. "Or was it a funeral home? I can't remember."

"It was an ancient Egyptian burial ground," Scott exclaims. "Gotta keep things exciting, Derek, don't you think?"

Derek agrees reluctantly. "I think so. Though, desecrating a burial site isn't really my style."

Scott shrugs. "That's what makes life interesting."

I look at Scott, trying not to wince in disgust. "You were having a meal inside a tomb?"

Scott laughs. "Of course not. No, I was merely having a snack. And I needed a place to do it in. There aren't a lot of places on those tours that allow you to eat while you make out with a girl. But if there are, they don't have 'em on Yelp." Scott turns to his date. "So, I might have used one of the caskets as a table. So what? I mean, those dead kings should be lucky that Chelsie even sat her beautiful ass on their old bones, let alone anything else."

He lifts her wrist and kisses it.

Derek gives me a sideways glance and shakes his head. I try to reel it in—my disgust. But I can't recapture it.

I try to channel my inner Susan Sarandon for a flash moment.

To tell myself that Scott is not the star of my movie. He's not a bad guy. He's just not a good guy. And he's not affecting my life.

"What about you, Derek?" Scott asks, turning his sights on the CEO beside me. "What scandalous behavior have you gotten yourself into lately?"

Derek's jaw tightens, and he shakes his head, his smile clearly strained. "You already know my scandalous behavior, Scott, I'm sure. Anyway, the Seattle Post likes to exaggerate. Anything to sell more issues."

Scott laughs. "Yeah, they needed something to print on their front page. I'm sure it's always a party where you are."

Derek moves his eyes to mine and winks. "Actually, things are fairly tame at the Hare & Holeton headquarters these days. You know the IPO is coming up soon, so we're just finalizing the last-minute details before the stock starts trading." Derek nods his head in the direction of the waiter who's approaching us with a steaming platter of seafood. "Our analytics report is coming in on schedule. The first-quarter launch party is not far off. So we're looking forward to—"

"Blah! Blah! Blah!" Scott raises his arms in the air, briefly silencing Derek. "Spare me the business jargon, Derek.
