Chapter Fourteen

There was no question that I would go with Tarja and Sulphurine. Though I didn’t have the same powers that they did—I couldn’t fly, and I could neither throw fireballs nor rake the faces of enemies who opposed me with claws—my connection magic might be necessary to save Kalleos’s life.

But really, even if I’d been completely useless, both of my women would insist on me joining them. They were ‘ride or die’ in the best sense of the word.

We’d followed the line of light through the trees, heading deeper into the thickets. Every now and then Sulphurine would take the lead, using her hellfire powers to clear the brush out of our path. Every time I saw her, I felt glad all over again that I’d gotten off before going to my meeting with Tarja. There’d certainly be no blood left for my brain if I hadn’t gotten multiple sessions of release with my beautiful succubus.

We were deep into the forest surrounding Beldame when the line of light began to fade.

It started so slowly that at first, we could delude ourselves into believing we were just imagining it. Every time Sulphurine summoned her flames we lost our night vision; and every time it came back, the glowing line on the ground glowed a little less fiercely. Even as we joked about it, my women found themselves picking up the pace, like we all subconsciously knew we were running out of time.

“Um, guys?” Tarja’s voice was gently slurred by her fully extended fangs. “That light’s getting really pale…?”

Suddenly the ground beneath my feet was plunged into darkness. The line flickered like a candle, burning brightly back to life for the briefest instant before winking out like a flipped switch. I stared as far ahead into the distance as I could, trying to burn the curve of the line into my memory so we wouldn’t get lost.

I wasn’t sure how good of a job I did.

“What the fuck!?” Sulphurine could be… heated in demon form. Right now, she looked like she wanted to punch her way through a tree. “That bitch tricked us!”

I wanted to protest that Mona might not have had anything to do with this.

Then I heard the noise.

The forest echoed with faint, female laughter.

“This was a trap,” Tarja grumbled, flexing her clawed fingers. “Mona wanted to get us out here so she could kill us!”

Flames sprang to life in Sulphurine’s palms. “Everybody brace yourselves!”

I waited for another wave of laughter to crackle through the forest. I’d heard it before—the sounds of minor predators crowding around weak prey, eager for a chance to get a little bit of meat. Those voices weren’t as powerful or as focused as Mona: they were the carrion eaters of the Fae, minor creatures who took what tiny power they could get.

I waited.

And heard nothing.

The forest was quiet. Deathly quiet. If there was something lurking out here, it was doing a damned good job of being stealthy.

Tarja and Sulphurine realized nothing was racing out of the treeline to attack us.
