CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Clarissa!” Toby called as he leapt through his dog flap. It clattered noisily behind him, but Clarissa didn’t complain as she usually would. The kitchen was devoid of hoomans, but even from his position close to the tiled floor, Toby could see the pile of washing up in the sink. There was a strange smell in the room too. A kind of cooped-up-with-stale-food smell.

Toby wrinkled his nose. Clarissa wasn’t obsessed with cleaning, but she did tend to stay on top of the housework—and if she was falling behind, a little cleaning spell took care of the worst of it.

From the direction of the living room came the sound of roaring and cheering. Toby tilted his head, listening. What could be going on in there? Was there a party?

Toby crept out of the kitchen and poked his head into the living room. Gobby Gordon was lying on the couch, feet up, wearing only his boxers and a pair of grey socks that might once have been white, watching football on the television. Clarissa was sitting in her regular place at the dining table behind her laptop, small earbuds in her ears, her forehead creased as she struggled to concentrate.

How selfish, thought Toby, sidling up to Clarissa and nudging her knee with his nose. She glanced down and the frown disappeared. “Hey!” She pulled out her earbuds and stroked the top of his head. “You’re warm. What have you been up to?”

“I had to go and see a dog about a car,” Toby started to explain.

“Could you pipe down?” Gordon asked, without turning around.

Clarissa shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “Sorry, Toby. Gordon’s watching the match.”

What the actual fluff? Toby could feel his hackles prickling. So whatty what! It’s our television in our living room in our house! Tell him we can talk if we want to! But he thought better of vocalising his internal rant. Instead, he tapped Clarissa’s foot. “Would you mind filling my bowl for me, please? I’m awfully thirsty.”

“Sure.” Clarissa slid her chair back and followed Toby into the kitchen. His bowl was full of clean water but she picked it up anyway, rinsed it out and filled it with cold water.

“I need your help,” Toby told her as she leaned over to return the bowl to its place on his easy-clean meal mat. “We—”

“We?” Clarissa looked around. Toby had left Pippin and Troot outside.

“My investigative team and I—”

“Oh yes?” Clarissa smothered a grin.

“We have an address for where we think the puppynappermobile has been parked, but there’s a Rottweiler living there and he wouldn’t answer our questions.”

Clarissa was struggling to keep up. “Puppynappermobile?”

“The pink car!”

“Oh yes. And you spoke to a Rottweiler?”

Toby shrugged. “There was no way of getting past him to speak to the residents of the house. Not in one piece, anyway.”

“I see.”

“He sent us packing, but we desperately want to find out who owns the car and where it is now—”

“Hmmm.” Clarissa glanced at the kitchen clock. “And you want me to go and ask the owner?”

Toby drew in a breath.
