27: Incompetence

The light rain and drizzle that accompanied the misty morning was not welcome to Clara. She felt soaked through to her bones. On top of that, they had not yet found Kyne. Every type of sign they had available to them pointed them back to Weapool. It didn't make sense. Weapool was where they were trying to bring Kyne. Where they wanted him to be. Why would he go through all the effort of going back to the city? He was fleeing from them, right? He was trying to get away from the life that he knew and the oaths he had made.

Apparently, Kyne had a death wish.

Clara did not care for any of the people waiting in line. It didn't bother her to forgo the formalities and get right to the front.

She was a paladin, after all. And who were all these people? Villagers. Peasants. People seeking refuge in Weapool.

Weapool was her home. Her domain. And she would not be denied access or be told to wait.

The paladins behind her trudged alongside of her as she made her way to the very front of the line and spoke to the guard.

"Paladins of the Order of the Suns," she said briskly.

That was all she had intended to say. She made to step forward through the line and into the city when a guard put out his hand.

"Everyone must be checked," he said as he looked over the crew. "Perhaps you did not hear the new order. Every person coming into Weapool must be processed properly."

Clara had not heard the new order. She did not care. Pietist would want to know where Kyne was, and she had the answer.

She took out her sword and placed it between herself and the guard.

"I believe this process will go swiftly," she said with a sneer.

She watched as the guards' eyes flickered over to his partner and then back to her. His throat made a warble as he swallowed hard.

"I don't mean to cause you consternation," he said slowly. "I'm just doing what I'm told. New orders of the captain, of course. We're looking for an escaped paladin."

"Fool!" Clara said as she took a step towards him and he lifted his clipboard to cover half of his face. "I am looking for the lost paladin! This is what these paladins are doing behind me! And we've tracked him back to the city! You are keeping us from our task!"

The guard lowered his clipboard a fraction.

"He's in the city?" he asked. "But how could that be? This is the only entrance in and out. We've been keeping constant watch."

"He's in the city," Clara said as she enunciated every single word more dangerously than the last. "And you're keeping us from tracking him. Move aside."

The guard listened and with a trembling hand, let them pass through.

Clara stepped forward and looked out over the city of Weapool. The streets were more full than she remembered. People must have been coming to the city and striving to find shelter from the more frequent goblin attacks that had been happening just outside.
