Chapter 5

Joey looked over the paperwork that he’d received this morning again. Something wasn’t adding up. Sebastian Gerald, another brother of his, was off the grid. He’d just simply disappeared from the shelter that he was living in with his sister. He could find her; Daisy Gerald was now living in a school nearly halfway across the world, but her big brother had gone from staying in the shelter for six months to nothing.

“What’s up?” He looked up at his son Michael when he came into the room. His son. His children. Joey couldn’t get enough of hearing or saying that to someone. “You’re looking sappy again. What did I do?”

“Nothing. Nothing at all. I was thinking about my brother.” He asked him if it was Caleb or Martin. “No, this is another brother. There are six of us in total. But Sebastian has disappeared. I can’t find him. And Caleb and I were going to go and get him in the morning.”

Joey pulled up the name of the school and whistled. He’d not done that before, and now he wished that he had. Showing it to Michael, the two of them looked at the picture of the activities that were available for children that resided at the school. Michael asked him if he thought about sending them there.

“No way. I like having you guys around all the time.” Michael looked relieved, and he let it go. “I wonder how he can suddenly afford this. I mean, according to this, it’s just under a hundred thousand a year. She’s ten, so that’s a few more years of this place if she’s going to be going there for a while.”

“Maybe he won the lottery or something. Or maybe Grandma Abby found her first.” Joey looked at his son and asked him why he’d think that. “Well, I hear you guys talking all the time about how generous she was. Maybe like Uncle Caleb says all the time, she saw a need and took care of it.”

He didn’t have any idea how long he sat there, more than likely with his mouth hanging open, thinking about what he’d been told. He’d bet his
