CHAPTER 10

“Iam so ready for some coffee,” Christy said as I parked in front of the Little Coffee Shop of Horrors.

“Me too.” We got out of the car. “It doesn’t seem to bother Mark that his cousin was murdered, and he had been trying to buy his grandparents’ property from her—not to mention the fact that he feels cheated out of the property, to begin with—I’d say he’s a suspicious character.”

She looked at me over the top of the car. “I agree. Sounds like a family feud to me.”

We headed into the coffee shop, where Amanda was finishing with a customer. She smiled at us when the customer left. “Hey, girls. What’s going on?”

We stepped up to the counter. “We are absolutely dying for some coffee, Amanda,” Christy said dramatically.

“You’re a lifesaver,” I said.

She chuckled. “No need to die for it. I’ll make you both a cup right away. I heard about what happened to Nancy Kelley,” she said as she grabbed a large cup and held it up to me for approval.

I nodded. “I’ve got to have a large, thanks. Have you heard any rumors about who might have killed her?” I asked, glancing around the coffee shop. There were customers huddled at tables, but none were close enough to overhear our conversation. Amanda had decorated the shop with plenty of jack-o’-lanterns along the windows and spiderwebs from the ceilings.

She shook her head. “Everybody has an opinion on Nancy’s death.” She raised her eyebrows at me. “Some people really believe she was a witch, and that she was casting spells on people. Other folks think she was just a lonely old woman who lived out in the woods by herself. I think it’s kind of sad, really. Nobody seems to have really known her, yet so many stories are being told about her. What can I get you two?”

“I’ll have a Jack-o’-lantern Latte,” I said.

“Vampire’s Kiss for me, and Carrie wants a Vanilla Mummy,” Christy added. “Oh, and Stephanie and Janelle are coming in soon. Maybe we should pick up Vanilla Mummies for them, too.”

I nodded. “And why don’t we each get a Jack-o’-lantern Muffin?”

Amanda nodded back. “Coming right up.”

Brian came out of the back room, and when he saw us at the counter, he hurried over.

“Hey, Mia, Christy. How’s it going?” he asked.

Amanda handed him two cups. “Can you make some Vanilla Mummies?” she asked.

He nodded. “Sure.”

“Not much is going on, Brian. Have you heard the latest?” Christy asked him.

He glanced over his shoulder as he got to work on the coffees. “You mean about the witch that was murdered? Yeah, I heard about it, but I didn’t know her or anything. I hope Ethan catches the killer.”

“We all do,” I said. The scent of freshly brewing coffee came to me, and I smiled in anticipation. I really needed that coffee.

The bell above the door jingled, and Helen Brock walked into the coffee shop. She grinned when she saw us and hurried over. “Hi, Mia. Hi, Christy. How are you two doing?” She giggled, looking as lit up as a Christmas tree.
