Chapter Fourteen
Nolan
The small bungalow home was quiet for the most part. Nolan crept on the side of the house. At first, being forced to live in the basement was a curse, but Nolan had come to embrace the freedom of being able to sneak in and out at will. His father was a hard sleeper, so the side door opening was never noticeable. Today was Saturday, and he was glad that his father was not at home. He’d been fishing since the break of dawn. He would ask one of his many other friends’ sons to go, but never his own, Nolan. But that was fine. Nolan hated the sight of him as well. Anytime the old man was there, an argument would break out between him and his girlfriend or anyone else under the roof he chose to be his target.
Extremely sore from both altercations, the injured teen limped toward the door using the wall of the house to steady his pace. Once inside, he fell back across his bed. The mattress and box spring were still on the floor, but Nolan had made it be his private home away from home. In deep thought about how he would handle the three guys and any of their people seeking revenge, he fell asleep. His dream was consumed about why his mother had even sent him on this side of town to live with his father from jump....

“Ma, what did I do so bad that you don’t want me around no more? I’m confused.” Wanting some understanding of her out-of-the-blue decision, Nolan begged his mother for an answer and some understanding.
“Look, boy, just pack your damn stuff and get ready to leave. I just can’t deal with you anymore,” she slurred, turning up the small bottle of cheap wine. “All the fights. All the disobeying me. All the skipping school, and all the times you running around here looking at my black ass like you crazy or something. Acting like I owe you some money. I’m your parent, not the other way around.”
Nolan frowned his brow. He couldn’t conceive why she was saying these things. Over the years, his mother had been known to make rash decisions, especially when twisted. But this time, Nolan didn’t see this coming. Usually, he was his mother’s go-to on everything she refused to deal with. Now, this. “Ma, are you serious right now? You can’t be.”
“As a damn heart attack, boy. So like I said, get your little bullshit and go on now. Get the fuck on.” Rubbing her fingers through her homemade brown hairstyle, she swiftly motioned toward the door as if her son were a stranger, not her firstborn.
Nolan was close to speechless. He had a lump in his throat, and once more, as many previous times, his mother had broken his heart. Once a homecoming queen, she had the face of an angel but a heart cursed by the devil. Her addictions had beaten her down in every sense of the word.
