CHAPTER NINE

KELLYISM:

CRAVING A LITTLE COMPANY AS YOU

SIT ALONE ON THE SHELF?

THINK CHOCOLATE CAKE, AND LOTS OF IT!

SIMON drove Kelly home some time after eleven.

She did not have to invite him up. He just followed and she did not stop him. She knew Gracie would not be home and that Simon did not care one way or the other.

Kelly passed the keys to her apartment door to Simon, who was waiting for them, hand outstretched. He unlocked the door, holding it open for her to enter before him.

There was a note on the floor from Cara to say she had taken Minky for a run on the beach and Kelly could pick her up when she got home. Kelly passed the note to Simon as though he lived there. Without demur he read it before placing it on the hall table below the keys.

‘You hungry?’ Kelly asked from the kitchen. She opened the pantry door to find it as bare as usual.

‘Sure. Why not?’

She glanced up to find him leaning against the doorframe. He had discarded his tie and the top button of his shirt was undone. He looked every inch the sort of man any worrying mother would warn their daughter not to let into their apartment. Her mother had sure warned her enough times and for the first time she thought she understood why.

He had been a beautiful boy who had grown into an exquisite-looking man. And she had not been there to witness any of the transformation. No wonder she found herself turning into a stunned mullet every time she looked upon him.

‘What have you got to eat?’ he asked, a roguish smile drawing her attentions to his lovely mouth.

Kelly slammed the cupboard door shut. ‘I’m not hungry anyway.’

He sauntered over her way, slow as he pleased, and Kelly shrank back against the kitchen sink, gripping onto the bench for dear life. The scent of his woodsy aftershave, warmed from a night of wear and dancing, tickled her nose. When level with her, Simon reached over and opened the pantry door. And as soon as he saw it was empty, the roguish look was replaced with a frown.

‘What is going on here?’

‘I eat out a lot,’ Kelly lied.

‘I doubt that. What with the way you scoffed down that steak at the restaurant the other night and the hustle with which you ate tonight, I think those were the first real meals you have had in a long time.’

Kelly rolled her eyes and pushed away from the bench. Her hunger, for food and for him, was fast replaced with defensive anger.

‘You sound like my mother!’

‘Well, then, she’s been talking sense.’

Kelly shot Simon a heated glance. The last thing she needed was for him to side with her mother! That was like the hawk and the bunny rabbit teaming up. Though she no longer knew who would be classed as which.

‘Things have been…tight for a little while,’ she admitted, ‘but that’s all changed now. Single and Loving It! means I will have a regular pay packet and life will become more comfortable from now on.
