Graceland on the Lawa, 2018. The owner of this house (a teacher at the Collège Achmat Kartadinama, a junior high school in Grand-Santi) had made a pilgrimage to the home of Elvis while studying for six months at the University of Mississippi.

Crêpes, Pizza, and Barber Shop, Grand-Santi, 2018.

The administrative post of Maripasoula, like the rest of the interior, was transformed overnight by the policy of francisation. It became the site of a town hall, a new school, and an expanded medical clinic, and was chosen as the main administrative center for the entire region encompassed by the Lawa and its tributaries. By the mid-1970s, Maripasoula had become the largest settlement in the Lawa River area and had the distinction of simultaneously being the geographically largest commune in the entire Republic of France and one of the least populated. In 1974 it had a total population of 803—248 Wayana and Emerillon Indians, 387 Maroons (almost all Aluku), and 168 Creoles.
