A German custom, practiced on New Year’s Eve.

The heated, liquid lead is thrown into a pail of cold water, forming a solid mass into which each individual reads a meaning triggered by his own imagination. The most frequent shape are: ships, thrown mostly by men; cradles, thrown mostly by mothers. Those pieces that have no distinct shapes are the subject of much heated discussion. A wonderful pastime for the “letdown hour” directly following the ringing in of the New Year.
