CHAPTER FOURTEEN

tess

I’m in the kitchen, kneading the dough for Aunt Marie’s homemade biscuits. It was a recipe of my grandma’s, and it’s my ultimate comfort food. After the events of last night, I’m pretty sure I’m going to need to double the recipe. Maybe triple so I can freeze some for emergencies.

Sam Cooke plays on the small radio that sits on top of the fridge. Pretty sure my dad bought it in the eighties, and it’s still kickin’. I picture this thing still on Earth a few hundred years from now when humans return after we finish destroying the planet. It’ll be an artifact in some futuristic museum.

I’m humming along to Sam as I scoop the last of the dough onto a cookie sheet and walk it to the oven. Aunt Marie is at the store, getting some things for dinner. Travis is coming over, a sweet new guy from the firehouse that is one thousand percent into her, but she is completely oblivious. She refuses to entertain any Dalesville suitors. But she also never talks about moving back north, either. It’s like she’s frozen between two lives; one she chose for herself, and one that fell into her lap, complete with a hormonal teenager she had to finish raising.

I’ll forever be indebted to my aunt. To the woman who stopped her life for the child she didn’t have and didn’t ask for. The child she loved like her own.

Just as I’m closing the oven and wiping my hands off on a dish towel, I hear a knock on my door that makes me jump. It’s more like an aggressive bang than a knock. I look at the clock that hangs over the sink. Aunt Marie just left a few minutes ago. She wouldn’t be back yet, and if she was, she wouldn’t be knocking.

I walk out into the living room, and I freeze when I see him through the front door windows. I draw in a sharp breath and walk to the door, my hand shaking as I pull it open.

“Yes?” is all I can say.

“Can we go for a drive?” he asks. I swallow and shake my head.

“Aunt Rie has a friend coming over for dinner,” I say. “I’m helping cook.”

He nods.

“Alright. Then, can we talk here?”

I think for a minute. I have at least a half hour before Aunt Rie gets back.

I nod and hold the door open for him to come inside.

I turn around once he closes the door and look up at him. I’m not inviting him past the foyer. That implies that he’s welcome here, or that it will be an extended visit—neither of which are true.

“What did you want to talk about?” I ask him, crossing my arms over my body.

“I know we don’t have a lot of time,” he says, “so I’m just gonna get right to it, Tess. I have never known a love the way that I love you.”

I stare at him, my eyes wide, stinging with tears that want to fall.
