Chapter 22

Emperors Chrysander and Ellery Draconis

Council of Sorcery and Shifters

Your Majesties, I can say I was truly surprised to receive your letter. In the two centuries since the Court of Draconis assumed leadership of the Council, the noble Consilium Veneficus started by my father, the once great Arch Wizard Egidius Giles, has not heard from you. From the tone of your correspondence, I can only presume that after so much time you wish to come to an alliance of sorts, and I do believe it would be in the best interests for everyone involved if we could reach such an agreement.

For weeks we have searched for our dear Arch Wizard, Severin Dewitt, and it was such a relief to find out that he is safe. As I stated above, I do wish to be cordial so we can move forward as a team to benefit those born with magic or your shifting ability, however it would be remiss of me not to be honest. I have only your word to take that your Council is not holding the leader of the Consilium Veneficus hostage to get the power structure you wish. Therefore, I have taken measures to seek out what is best for our government by speaking directly with the advisors of the Arch Wizard.

I am afraid they are much less trusting than myself and found it disconcerting that you would send your note to me. After all, who am I but the son of a now dead ruler? I have no official role in the Consilium Veneficus, and my only contribution has been to offer real estate owned by my deceased father for the impoverished Arch Wizard who rose to power with no resources of his own. Since you did involve me, we came to an agreement that I will continue to be the point of contact for negotiations.

Still, I did have to make certain concessions. Although I find it vulgar to speak of money with strangers, I must pass along the demand that the Council of Sorcery and Shifters pay the Consilium Veneficus the amount listed at the bottom of this correspondence. It is to compensate us for what may very well be the kidnapping of our Arch Wizard. We understand that there will be some difficulty as your money is electronic, but we will assist how we can to convert it to our preferred currency.

I appreciate that you recognize Giles Castle as my home and yes, my father did consider it the seat of his government, but that was secondary to it being our family residence. I was born and raised in this castle, and I cannot imagine a circumstance in which I would be willing to move out. It is filled with irreplaceable memories and family heirlooms. The current Arch Wizard was brought to Giles Castle, and while I have the utmost respect for the man, he was quite out of place to expect me to move out. As poor as he was, I kindly offered one of the residences I assumed ownership of upon the death of my father.
