The woman wiped away tears. “Thank you,” she said as I helped her to her feet.

“I’m sorry they stole your food,” I said. “My papa and I don’t have much, but you can come inside and—”

“Thank you,” she said. “I’m not hungry anymore.” She hung her head. Tears continued to run down her face.

“Do you want some water? Do you want to sit?” I asked.

The woman shook her head. “No, I have to get home,” she said. She started walking away, then turned. “Thank you for your kindness,” she said. “Thank you.”

I nodded and went back inside.

Papa put his hands on my shoulders. “That was a dangerous thing to do,” he told me. “But it was also the right thing to do. You are strong and brave, piccolina. I’m so proud of you.”

Papa and I watched the fires and the people.

“You’re right,” I said after a while. “We can’t wait for Paolo. And we can’t go looking for him. We have to go to Milan.”
