When Lucy and Chantelle reached the car, Lucy spilled the question she’d been holding in.

“You don’t think it’s kind of strange? To call us all the way there just to discuss that?”

“Honestly, I thought it was old fashioned and polite. Things are done too easily over the phone and through computers now. He could have sent us a note, or left us a message, but instead he wanted to see us face to face. It wasn’t his fault, but he still apologized for our experience.”

“Right, or maybe he just wanted to make sure that we didn’t think it was his fault.”

“What?” Chantelle studied her for a moment. “I thought you were convinced that it was Albert’s old employers that had something to do with his death.”

“Honestly, I’m not convinced of anything. According to the police it’s most likely that June is the one who poisoned Albert. But I can’t think of any reason for her to do that, aside from someone asking her to do it, or influencing her in some way. Richard promised to give a lot of what he owned to Albert. His children would be left with very little.”

“Which gives the children motive, but not necessarily their father. I mean, Albert wouldn’t stand to inherit anything unless Richard was dead.”

“I guess, but maybe he just got tired of whatever hold Albert had over him.”

“You don’t even know if there was a hold though and if there was, what it was. What could he have possibly had on him that would have influenced Richard that much?”

“It must have been something terrible. Something so scandalous that Richard would do anything to hide it.”

“Hm. But he has such a good reputation in the community, I can’t imagine what he could be hiding. Maybe he just really had a close connection with Albert, as he claimed. Maybe they just grew close. His children aren’t exactly connected with him, maybe Richard and Albert just clicked.”

“Maybe.” Lucy gazed out the window as shops and houses slid by. “I’m sure it can be very lonely to be so wealthy.”

When they arrived at the shop, Jacqueline was just beginning to prepare for the afternoon rush.

“How did it go, girls?”

“We need to increase the order for Mr. Cline, he said he just wants a mixture. He’s invited us to attend the party as well.” Lucy smiled as she handed her mother the order slip. “He ordered almost double what he previously ordered.”

“Wonderful.” Jacqueline breathed a sigh of relief. “An order like his will really help the books around here.”

“The question is can we make that many macarons between now and then?” Chantelle laughed.

“The more important question is what are you two going to wear?” Jacqueline grinned.

“I’m sure I have a dress in my closet.” Lucy shrugged.

“Oh no, no. You can’t wear just any dress to an event like this, Lucy. This will be a formal party.”

“Mom, I’m sure it will be fine.”

“Actually she’s right, Lucy. We really should get some evening gowns.”

“You’re enjoying this aren’t you?” Lucy raised an eyebrow.
