When Lucy and Chantelle reached the car, Lucy spilled the question sheâd been holding in.
âYou donât think itâs kind of strange? To call us all the way there just to discuss that?â
âHonestly, I thought it was old fashioned and polite. Things are done too easily over the phone and through computers now. He could have sent us a note, or left us a message, but instead he wanted to see us face to face. It wasnât his fault, but he still apologized for our experience.â
âRight, or maybe he just wanted to make sure that we didnât think it was his fault.â
âWhat?â Chantelle studied her for a moment. âI thought you were convinced that it was Albertâs old employers that had something to do with his death.â
âHonestly, Iâm not convinced of anything. According to the police itâs most likely that June is the one who poisoned Albert. But I canât think of any reason for her to do that, aside from someone asking her to do it, or influencing her in some way. Richard promised to give a lot of what he owned to Albert. His children would be left with very little.â
âWhich gives the children motive, but not necessarily their father. I mean, Albert wouldnât stand to inherit anything unless Richard was dead.â
âI guess, but maybe he just got tired of whatever hold Albert had over him.â
âYou donât even know if there was a hold though and if there was, what it was. What could he have possibly had on him that would have influenced Richard that much?â
âIt must have been something terrible. Something so scandalous that Richard would do anything to hide it.â
âHm. But he has such a good reputation in the community, I canât imagine what he could be hiding. Maybe he just really had a close connection with Albert, as he claimed. Maybe they just grew close. His children arenât exactly connected with him, maybe Richard and Albert just clicked.â
âMaybe.â Lucy gazed out the window as shops and houses slid by. âIâm sure it can be very lonely to be so wealthy.â
When they arrived at the shop, Jacqueline was just beginning to prepare for the afternoon rush.
âHow did it go, girls?â
âWe need to increase the order for Mr. Cline, he said he just wants a mixture. Heâs invited us to attend the party as well.â Lucy smiled as she handed her mother the order slip. âHe ordered almost double what he previously ordered.â
âWonderful.â Jacqueline breathed a sigh of relief. âAn order like his will really help the books around here.â
âThe question is can we make that many macarons between now and then?â Chantelle laughed.
âThe more important question is what are you two going to wear?â Jacqueline grinned.
âIâm sure I have a dress in my closet.â Lucy shrugged.
âOh no, no. You canât wear just any dress to an event like this, Lucy. This will be a formal party.â
âMom, Iâm sure it will be fine.â
âActually sheâs right, Lucy. We really should get some evening gowns.â
âYouâre enjoying this arenât you?â Lucy raised an eyebrow.
