But the son spoke up and said he had eaten the very same food and he was fine. The son arrived in Mali, claimed his money, and returned to Egypt. Mansa Musa had been true to his word.
Ibn Battuta was just one of several Arab storytellers who were instrumental in spreading the name of Mansa Musa and stories about his travels. Ibn Khaldun was a well-known Arab historian. Born in Tunisia in 1332, he spent most of his life in the service of northern African rulers. He wrote of diplomatic exchanges between Mali and Morocco. Like Ibn Battuta, he, too, learned about Mansa Musa from local men and told their stories in his writings. Ibn Khaldun also wrote about the kings who preceded Mansa Musa, and he was the source of information about the work of Andalusian architect es-Saheli.
Another Arabic scholar, Shihab ad-Din Ahmad ibn Fadl Allah al-Umari, known as al-Umari, was born in Damascus in 1301. He was interested in collecting and recording stories, and travel served this purpose. He visited Cairo years after Mansa Musa’s pilgrimage. He found officials and others still talking about the Malian king’s time there, especially his gifts and purchases in gold. He also interviewed people who had lived in Mali for many years and were able to describe the court at Mali. Al-Umari died in Damascus in 1349. His complete work, called Pathways of Vision in the Realms of the Metropolises, has never been published.
Arab storyteller Ibn Khaldun told the stories of Mansa Musa’s architect, es-Saheli.
