Chapter 15

Daphne

Day three in the alternate dimension of Alcott house was a disaster of nerve-wracking anticipation. Daphne found herself pacing back and forth across the cold, unyielding stones of a dimly lit corridor that seemed to stretch on endlessly.

The chill beneath her feet seeped through the thin fabric of her shoes, a blunt reminder of the eerie strangeness of her current environment. A solitary ray of sunlight, trapped within the confines of the leaded glass window, fought to pierce the cloak of gloom.

It cast an ethereal glow on the ancient painting hanging on the wall opposite her. The scent of timeless decay – a mix of must and dampness, subtly permeated the air around her, the omnipresent aroma serving as a constant reminder of the alternate world she was ensnared within.

“Find anything yet?” Matthew’s question echoed through the silent expanse, his voice bouncing off the cold stone walls before reaching Daphne. She turned around to face her brother, her eyes taking in the signs of strain evident on his face. The usual spark in his eyes was clouded by worry, the dark circles beneath them evidence tof the constant stress gnawing away at them.

“Nothing,” Daphne confessed, a sigh accompanying her words. Her voice, usually so full of vitality, was now laced with frustration. “I’ve been scouring every corner, every room, but I can’t find a single clue about what might have happened to Lucas in this dimension.”

“Keep looking, Daph. We’ll figure it out eventually.” He reassured her, his hand coming to rest on her shoulder.

“Thanks,” Daphne whispered in response, her heart awash with a wave of gratitude for her brother’s unfaltering faith in their mission.

Their moment was abruptly shattered by the arrival of Reva. She burst into the corridor, her face flushed with a mix of adrenaline and excitement that added a spark to her eyes. “Guys! I’ve just had a conversation with Dolly and the alternate Daphne, and they think they have found a potential lead on how we can return home!”

“Really?” Daphne’s heart stuttered at the prospect of their return to their own world. But the thought also ignited a flicker of pain at the possibility of confronting Lucas’s fate again. “What did they find?”

With her eyes gleaming with the first hint of hope they had seen in days, Reva elaborated, “Apparently, somewhere hidden within the confines of this house is a book that could potentially hold the key to unravel the complexities of the portal magic we’ve been dealing with. All we have to do is find it.”

“Great,” Matthew responded, the anticipation in his voice reflected in the way he rolled up his sleeves, ready to plunge back into the chaos of their mission. “Let’s get to it, then.”

They split up to cover more ground, each driven by a renewed sense of purpose in their search. Daphne navigated her way toward the labyrinthine library, her heart pounding in sync with the rhythmic creak of the wooden floor beneath her feet.

The towering mahogany shelves were lined with rows upon rows of dusty tomes and parchment scrolls, their covers weathered by the passage of time.
