Chapter 17

Despite the drama, we walked out of the Treasure hall with bright smiles. Even though Jonny didn’t get the shiny gear he wanted, he still kept looking at the ring on his finger in awe.

Unfortunately, I could feel someone watching us. “Jonny, stop looking at your spacial ring.” I hissed hoping that we hadn’t drawn unwanted attention.

Locksprings was pretty safe, but there were criminal elements anywhere there were people.

“What do you—”

Steve smacked Jonny upside the head. “Someone is watching you.”

He clammed up really fast.

But it was too late.

I was yanked into an alley along with Steve and Jonny before I realized what was happening.

“Wha—” A fist slammed into my gut, catching me by surprise.

“Don’t speak,” a gruff voice said as hands wandered through my pockets until he saw my spacial ring.

“Got it?” a second thug wearing a mask asked.

I recognized Hank’s voice.

Somehow knowing who it was gave me the confidence to slam my head back into the guy’s face before he could get the ring off my finger.

Steve freed himself and gave the guy holding Jonny a right hook that snapped his head back. I caught Steve’s eye and motioned for him to get Jonny out.

I sweeped someone’s legs, then punched the masked Hank.

He staggered back, but there were more of them. One clocked me in the face, but instead of me screaming in pain, that guy ended up pulling his hand back and nursing it.

“Rick?” They paused seeing the unexpected reaction.

“Felt like I just punched a brick wall.”

I took the moment to get up close to the one nursing his hand and chop him in the back of the head, sending him to the alley floor out cold.

The alley lit up with a red glow as one of them started to cast a fire spell.

Hank cut in again as the fire winked out. “Do you want to send up a flare for the guards? Idiot!”

I looked back to see Steve pulling Jonny clear of the situation and decided to let loose. This would be my first chance to see how my bloodline-improved body fared against cultivators from a sect.

“His friends are running. Just take him down. He’s the one with all the money.” Hank smiled, and I found myself mobbed by the six of Hank’s gang that were still standing.

Fists and kicks rained down on me, but I just shrugged them off and pulled off one of the attackers to throw him at another.

“It’s really like punching a freaking wall. He’s not even using his mana.”

“Freaky, bumpkin,” another said, trying to tackle my legs, but I met his face with my knee, eliciting a satisfying crunch of his nose.

I just snorted at these fellows. Obviously, they wanted the betting money I’d earned in the Treasure Hall, but they hadn’t expected my body to be iron. But to be fair, I hadn’t really either. The amount of pain I was feeling given all the hits was amazing.

“Pin him down,” Hank called, and they piled onto me.

Even being tougher than them, there wasn’t much I could do when sheer numbers tried to lock me up.
