He awoke in Archie’s bed. Lay breathing in time with Archie for a while. But couldn’t resettle. He was careful not to disturb Archie as he climbed out. Careful not to clatter his armour as he collected it from the floor. He walked softly in his socks upstairs, careful not to tread on the stair that creaked. But stopped at the guest bedroom door. Mother. His mother. Tomorrow. Today actually. Michael had let her in. Goosebumps rose on his arms. Mother was going to be in his guest bedroom. Where he mostly slept when he was at home. His feet wouldn’t take him across the threshold. Her presence was already in it. He turned and made his way back downstairs.

But there were definitely two people already in his and Juliette’s bed. Was it Juliette and Maisie? Or Juliette and Christopher? Either way he was loath to disturb them, Juliette was a light sleeper after her years as an intern and registrar.

Maybe he would read for a while. His heart was beating quickly now. Nervously.
