Chih made their way to storage, where they pulled out a box containing a dozen yellow ropes, all hung with sweetly chiming brass bells. The bells were brought out and blessed routinely by clerics from the Order of the Shrike, who knew better than anyone else what to do with the walking dead, and on consideration, Chih took the whole box with them.

They hung a strand around the plane tree where Cleric Thien liked to read, another on their shelf in the archives, where they kept some of the heavier things they couldn’t drag back to their rooms. There were plenty of places where Cleric Thien or a spirit pretending to be them might go, but finally, down to the last few ropes, Chih returned to their room. Ropes went over the doorways, and then Chih realized that the window was open again, the shutters parted to let in a breath of fresh air.

“I thought I closed that,” Chih said to themself, but they knew there was no might have about it.

They closed and locked the window again, and they hung a blessed belled rope over it.

Finally, feeling all the time as though there was someone just beyond sight in the shadows, they hurried to bed.
